when soaking grains for an extract brew like 30min soak then a 20min soak at 66oc would i be able to put the pot in the oven at around 60 oc to keep the temp stable or does anybody have a reason why this wouldnt work was thinking it would be easier than trying to wrap it in towels an the like to keep the heat in :cheers:
 
Many people do that, just don't go over. To be honest though, I've never had a problem with adding small amounts of grain into the actual boil and filtering them out at the end. Not a good technique for bigger grain bills, but works a treat for a few hundred grams
 
The oven thing I don't see a problem with it so long as you maintain your steady temp.

Boiling the grains is not a good idea. The reason the grains are steeped at a lower temp to begin with is to get the flavor and color out of them without extracting all the harsh tannins. Over sparging and sparging too hot for all grain beers suffer from tannin extraction as do beers that are extract and the grains get boiled.
