Hi All,

I have a batch of Mild AG ready to keg so tonight when I came in I went out to the shed grabbed my pre-cleaned corny only to undo the lid and get a very big waft of pepsi/coke syrup  I had cleaned this keg out around 4 weeks ago, it had been sat in my shed since I bought it from fleabay and I filled it with Oxi warm water overnight and undid the in/out and washed them and it smelt fine, so I popped the lid back on and left it in the shed.

Today after again another oxi soak and rinse and it still stinks of syrup, and I don't particularly want to put my beer in it and this is my only other keg. SWMBO has said 'go buy a new one its only £74 from Hope and Grape' but is that a bit drastic? The beer has been sat in a FV for 16 days now and I'm getting nervous about every passing day as the CO2 buildup is now reducing dramatically. The seal on the FV is quite good even a slight CO2 buildup causes parts of the lid to rise but currently not a inch of the lid is risen and I'm scared its going to get infected if it isnt kegged soon. Any ideas on getting rid of the syrup smell, or should I get an express order in with Hop and Grape and worry about the smelly keg later?

Cheers

I had one like that, caustic soda did the job nicely. About 100g tipped into 2 litres of hot (not boling) water in the keg. Seal, shake vigorously and then let some out the out post with a disconnect connected to a tube to run it off safely (pressure will be already generated). Leave it a bit, discard and rinse well.

I followed up with a bit of peracetic to sanitise and make sure smell had gone (vinegar might be as good)

Finally a kettle or 2 of boiling water, seal, shake and run out through the outpost under the pressure generated by heat. Turn upside down and dribble out through the valve.

Caustic and peracetic are nasty so gloves and goggles, don't get it on you and wash off immediately if you do.

Make sure keg has relief valve open while cooling.

Check all the seals and plastic bits and replace if any smell like the syrup. Rubber and plastic can absorb odours, stainless cannot.

Have you tried disassembling the in/out post and thoroughly cleaning them?
