Summary

  1. Eight candidates make it onto the ballot for the Conservative Party leadership contest
  2. The chair of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady, announces those who have received the support of at least 20 MPs
  3. The eight are Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, Jeremy Hunt, Penny Mordaunt, Rishi Sunak, Liz Truss, Tom Tugendhat and Nadhim Zahawi
  4. Sajid Javid and Rehman Chishti withdraw from the contest just minutes before the deadline
  5. Candidates are pitching their bids to fellow Tory MPs at a closed hustings in Westminster. They each have 12 minutes to speak
  6. Successful contenders will go through to a vote on Wednesday, with the final two candidates selected before the end of next week
  7. The winner will be announced on 5 September

Not sure who would be the least worst option as they are all pretty dire. Part of me wants to agree with @pilgrimhudd that someone like Truss would increase the odds of a Labour win, but whoever get it won’t have any obligation to call an election for a couple of years so could do a hell of a lot damage until then.
