I made this Dry Stout last month and it turned out pretty good. Simple 70:20:10 ratio of Pale malt. Flaked Barley and Roasted Barley. Bittered with EKG to about 37 IBU's and used US-O5 yeast. Fantastic out of the corny with the nitro, the ones I bottled have tough competition :D .

Tastes along the lines of Guinness, will have to get a can and compare them. Making a stout is no harder than any other recipe, post up your setup and can try and help you out.

Hey Kitoog.
That looks a great pint. I want to do something similar.
I was just wondering where you got your nitro beer gas from?

I am using the widget world cylinder 70/30 nitrogen to c02.

not sure of all the terms for the kit but me and arkaler (new member) are sharing the stuff never done mix straight from ingredients and my mate has only done a kit so far but this is what i want to get, so here is what we have but dont know how to use it

ferment bucket and lid
frement bucket with heater in bottom tap on side and thermostat (mash tun ?)
filter thing
thermometer
hydrometer
demi johns
bottle top press
syphon tube
plastic spoon
and lots of the mrs pots and pans (but dont tell her)
getting corny on saturday

seems like you have a boiler anyway. All you really need now is a mash tun. A mash tun is basically a container of some sort which is well insulated to keep the heat in. Cooler boxes make great mash tuns and can be made cheaply. Its a big step doing an all-grain recipe first, maybe a coopers stout kit maybe a way easier start. All grain brewing (barley, hops etc) is not hard it just takes a lot longer than a kit to make up and need more equipment.

yeah me too.. :drink:

I must say it look Bloody Great...
Dont forget to do he back to back taste test...
Did you use any finings? How long did you leave in cask before serving?

This is my first Irish Dry Stout but I have also done an American Stout and some porters. Its strange alright that EKG is recommended for a Dry Stout , Galena, Northdown etc will of course work too. The standard recipe only calls for a 60min bittering addition anyway. I actually used whirlfloc copper finings for first time with this recipe, not that you would really notice anyway. :D Hopefully my next pale ale has no chill haze and I'll be happy.

Hi, did you do the back to back taste test?

Sorry, forgot to report back. Well I compared mine to bottled Guinness and draught can. Though mine was better, I would say that would'nt I :D . Guinness actually tasted fairly bland when you got down pint a bit and could taste it without the foamy bitter head. A few friens tasted it also and thought it was good too. I primed my bottles to about 1.8 vol. c02, which was too low as head is still pretty poor. Hopefully they will improve over time. The bottles of Guinness extra stout I tried were very fizzy, easily giving a nice foamy head. Maybe next time I will prime my bottles by more. The stuff out of the corny really looks the part with the nitro/c02 gas. Might brew this again befors xmas.
