A bit of a poor man's purge as well, given there's only an entry and no exit for the gas. Unless you count multiple pressure/release cycles, but it's still less than ideal compared with through-flushing, as with most purpose-designed solutions.

I think I'll stick to chucking hops through the airlock hole while bubbling CO2 from the base for sensitive beers. It's also less than perfect, but it also doesn't cost Ā£25.
