3 years ago passed first time after 16 lessons, 3 minors and I had a bad head cold, although my driving instructor was an absolute legend, really knew his stuff.

I've got a mate learning with him now, the car when I was driving it had about 280k miles of just learners, a few years on it's apparently scraping 400k. And somehow still going - old turbo diesel 206. I'm just waiting for someone to put it out of it's misery

Best of luck mate, they just want to see you're a competent and safe driver at the end of the day, just observe the absolute hell out of everything and drive as you normally would, if you make a mistake don't worry! - I thought I'd failed on a couple of things but they were just minors.

Remember, they want to pass you, they aren't looking to fail you unless they think you'll be a genuine danger, just relax, chill out and show them your skills.

Passed the car test first time in 1992 with four lessons (and a lot of ferrying my dad around to gain experience), and the bike test first time in 1993 with two days training.

But again, there was no theory test (apart from four or five "what does this sign mean" and a couple of "what would you do if..." questions from the examiner) so I'm guessing it was a little less stringent.

Good luck with your test!

I passed second time in Feb 1999. I failed my first test with the easy examiner as I wasn't really ready for it, then as well as having my normal lessons I had many dad teaching me, and nearly failed again, this time for being too over confident. My excuse is my dad was teaching me how to drive as he was taught when has was learning how to do car chases in the police.

Passed first time 16/6/1971 in my old man's 1966 Vauxhall Victor 101 Estate with 3 speed column change ,I reckoned that the examiner though if I could drive that ok I was good enough to pass!

2nd time pass for me in a bogey/phlegm green Citreon C3. Apparently i nearly flattened a pedestrian stood on an island in the middle of the road, thats why i failed. I disagree though, he wasn't at that point attempting to cross.
Following the examiners logic id of had to stop every time i see a pedestrian on the footpath.

The only advice i can offer is really work on the observational side of things. When i passed i picked up 6 minors on a 3 point turn alone. All down to lack of observation. I couldn't physically of looked around anymore than i did.

If you drop a clanger, youl be marked on how you deal with the situation. So if you run over a dog and possibly the person attached to it, as long as you check your mirrors, indicate and safely pull over to the left, you should be ok. :D

1st time passer in '91, 3 months after my 17th birthday. I was so concentrated on not screwing it up that I ignored the directions from the tester and just went my own way. Luckily he was a nice chap and passed me (even though he was a bit late for his next test)

I saw a funny bumper sticker this morning: THINK BIKE! THINK YOUR MOTHER! (Just thought I'd share)

Passed third time around 93. The surprisingly successful test involved a period where the examiner and I stopped to remove a large cardboard box lodged firmly in the wheel arch after I'd run into it. I should have gone around it..."It could have been full of metal for all you know...", but he obviously didn't fancy the prospect of having to go out with me again in the car, so I passed.

I passed on third go back in 1997. It was stupid nervous mistakes that got me. Oh, and speeding! only 35 in a 30 but the examiner noticed before me so big red X in the box.

The best advice I got was, don't just glance at the mirror, they might not see you doing it. Actually say 'mirror' when you are looking in it.

The best drivers always pass second time. Passed second time way back in 1973. Failed for crossing the line at a traffic light waiting to turn right and the light turned red while waiting behind a lorry and noticed too late the light had changed. Anyway second time was a breeze. Try to relax and stay focused and you will be fine.

Passed first time in 1983 two days before my 21'st birthday.

My driving instructor was good at drilling into me the need to evaluate and anticipate different hazards. It must of worked as I had to do an emergency stop for real in the middle of the test when a pedestrian walked out from behind a transit as I was overtaking it. I managed the stop without hitting him (just - it was pretty close) and I nearly put the inspector through the windscreen as he wasn't expecting it  (those old fixed three point seat belts were really rubbish).

It scared the cr*p out of me initially, but I managed to stay in control and carried on. The inspector never said a word about it at the end of the test but he was white as a sheet when he told me i'd passed.

Anybody else nearly kill somebody on their test?? :?

I passed second time round in 2000, my first tester was a right t**t and just sat there saying nothing at all, didn't even reply when I said hello to him...just sat there issuing instructions. That made me really nervous and I ended up failing...I sat another test 2 weeks later and the tester was a really nice bloke who chatted to me about my uni course through the whole test. I was so much more relaxed and passed with only 2 minor errors.

Good luck and just try and relax, don't think of it as a test and just like a run down the shops or something...slow and steady and you should be ok :thumb:

Slow and steady seems to be the key then, I just hope the testers not a tool like a few of you have had, I'll just try and relax and think of it as a wee drive around, fingers crossed eh, cheers guys.

No, but I almost got killed myself.

It was my second test, and I'd just done a parallel park on a particularly difficult road in Cambridge. It was a back street with cars parked nose-to-tail all along the road and a 20mph speed limit. I got ready to drive out of the space where I'd parked, and looked back to check the road behind was clear. The road isn't straight, but I could still see a reasonable way past the bend and could see no cars coming, so I pulled out, moving slowly because the road had a high camber making it tricky to manoeuvre. I looked over my shoulder to check the road was still clear just as I was almost out, and there's a roadster turning the corner at what looked like about twice the speed limit. There was no way I could reverse back in time, but fortunately he just managed to avoid me. A few seconds later and he'd have ploughed into the side of the car, quite possibly killing me and almost definitely writing both cars off.

Unfortunately pulling out when a car is coming up behind you is an automatic fail, even if the ******* is doing twice the speed limit at the time

I HATE driving in Cambridge, its all those bloody cyclists that think they own the roads! Shame it's nearest place for a proper shopping centre as well (I live in Newmarket where the town centre is near non existent!).

Newmarket has a town centre? I don't remember there being one when my grandparents lived up the road in Chippenham.

Good luck, mate.

I passed first time, just. I was nervous, but what was more frightening for me than the actual test
was the first time I drove with no one else in the car! I dropped the leg iron off at the train station,
and considering it's a 2 minute jaunt, must of made more mistakes
on the way back than in all of my lessons!

Well I was barely an adult at the time, today I would ask him why he was behaving in an intimidatory way?

Passing your test doesn't mean you've learned to drive, you'll learn a lot more in the months after, driving solo, than you did in the run up to the test :hat:
