I totally agree Terry but this was 25 years ago (it was my post) and attitudes to drinking and driving as many things (sexist and racist joke and on the telly etc) were a lot different back then than they are today and that is no bad thing.

Chippy_Tea; Actually it wasn't your post, it was here.....

I may be being thick but if you lower the drink drive limit then you'll increase the number of fatalities with a driver over the limit as more will be judged to be so. Assuming alcohol consumption actually stays the same. I don't think either limit will affect the old boys down my local who daily have five pints and drive home.
80mg is fine.

I see, i thought it referred to this i posted earlier -

I doubt many here would disagree, 20 years ago attitudes to drinking and driving were a lot more relaxed and I know many people who used to do it regularly, I don't mean people getting smashed then driving I mean people having three or four pints over a few hours most people now wouldn't dream of driving after four pints but that isn't really why I started the thread

I think that is a VERY bad thing. Wish Bernard Manning was still around - he'd reyten the bleeders. Anyroad... times change as you say, and these days it's not so much drink-drivers you've to look out for, it's folk spaced out on cannabis, ketamine etc etc. There's an awful, awful lot of that sorta thing around.

You are right Gunge we watch the cop prog on the telly where a film crew goes out on patrol (cannot remember the name) they are catching as many drug driver as drink drivers in fact probably more.

I don't think there has been a knee jerk reaction its a poll to see what members views are.

I often go out for a pub meal in village pubs in my area as a lot of them do really nice food and will have a couple of pints during the evening (and no more) SWMBO doesn't drive so if they brought the limit down to the equivalent of 1 pint or non at all i would not bother why go to a pub for a meal if you cannot enjoy a couple of pints while eating it you may as well go to the local chippy or Chinese and eat it at home, if others feel the same village pubs would suffer.
The food can't be that good if you need a couple of pints to enjoy it!

I didn't say i needed two pints to enjoy the meal i said " i enjoy a couple of pints while eating" and "i will have a couple of pints during the evening" i didn't mean i tip two pints down my neck while eating the meal i meant during the evening out for me going for a pub meal involves having beer as part of the experience.

I voted for "it's fine as it is."
I tried to figure out BAC (blood alcohol content) between US and UK. I think they're the same. .08 is the legal limit here in Michigan and when I did the math for the UK, I got .08 also. The two, average drinks sounds about right also.
I haven't read the responses yet but for driving a car, I think the current level is okay.
When I ride a motorcycle, I keep it at zero drinks. I actually don't drink anything when I'm driving a car either. I wouldn't say drinking a couple pints is dangerous but it could put someone below their absolute best ability to perform in an emergency.

I always believe that to ban something, you need to demonstrate a fairly conclusive case for it infringing someone else's freedom or basic rights. As per the Scottish limit reduction, I just don't see it. So stay the same for me

I think the limit should be a bit lower, but I'd like to see a rolling scale of penalties...

Over 10 - £100 fine + 1 point
Over 20 - £250 fine + 3 points
Over 30 - £1000 fine + 6 points
Over 35 - £2500 fine + 3 months ban
Over 40 - £5000 fine + 12 months ban
For repeat offenders within 5 years penalties should be doubled.

I'd like the fine revenue to go into the police budget to pay for extra road side testing... More testing... Less drink drivers... Safer roads!

You could always have a alcohol free beer

Over 40 pints should be a little more than £5k fine :)

It should be zero, plain and simple. Although there is no "zero in" D&A tests, there's always a tolerance, which makes sense as it differentiates being drunk to recently having mouthwash, etc.

The amount of people who go to the pub for "just one" are few and far between.

The argument for being unable to visit the local out of town pub for "a pint" is a weak one. By all means go, have you pint and wait 2-3 hours before driving home. Or just have a glass of juice... Even better, get a lift. If you're that concerned about them going out of business, you'd soon make special arrangements to get there to support them...

Doesn't matter if its 15 pints or 1. Your judgement is impaired regardless.

How many pints would you be happy with the pilot of your next flight having before they took your children on holiday? What makes you any safer driving your car after the same?
