I've just placed an order for a couple of more kits, and forgot to order the DME at the same time.

As I *really* don't want to pay another £14.50 for delivery of 1kg DME, will my Coopers Mexican Cerveza taste cr@p if I make with with dextrose instead?

It should just be crisper, drier and a bit thinner...

...pay really close attention to the temperature though as you really want to avoid off flavours at all costs - keep it cool. The malt would leave a little residual sweetness which can mask a little bit. You won't have that wriggle room with dextrose...

Thanks... it might go to the bottom of the pile for an autumn brew then, as I can't guarantee not to have a temperature spike until late october.

If I wait I can buy the DME with another delivery of something else.

Thanks Calum!

Because it's non-fermentable and will therefore contribute body and sweetness that can make it rather cloying. Might consider raising the hop charge as increasing IBU's will balance sweetness with bitterness.

Just to clarify, sorry, with DME you'll get some non-fermentible stuff left behind - dextrose will ferment right out. A bit of Saaz or other lagery style hops as a dry hop, when using DME as the extra fermentibles would turn it into probably something really special.

So, yes, stick the kit on the shelf until your next order goes, get the extra light DME and some hops too! :thumb:

Well that was expensive DME!

Went to buy 1kg DME, and ended up spending £160!

Anyway, I now have enough empty bottles to last me forever... couldn't help buying a couple of kits though ;) At this rate i'll have enough backlogged to keep me going til Christmas!

Ouch!!!

I know the feeling though...

yeah dextrose is sugar man....not non fermentable at all, hahah.

all sorted then casey! i would always recommend against 1kg sugar, but if the kits state to use it, it'll work without destroying the flavour too much.

£160 spent..... well done at least the shopkeeper loves you....... :D

Since restarting brewing I've found my biggest expense has been on buying bottles for each brew. It's a thing I have I dislike miss matched bottles and love the sight of ranks of identical good clean new ones.
At my local lhbs they charge £12.99p for a case of 2 dozen 500ml pet bottles, so that's £26 on top of the kit and its sundries. who says home brewing is cheap.... but at least the bottles are forever....unlike the contents......

and they do look nice....

Hopefully I have now reached the stage where it only needs an occaisional purchase of a case of bottles as the empties come around.

If you ate haapy to have bottles embossed with Magners, then getting a load of these from a pub is the cheapest (free) way of getting pint bottles I know.

I've found a brilliant way round this problem. Simply drink at least 4 dozen of any given brewery's beers! Viola! One complete set of identical bottles for a brew... :thumb:

At 2.95€ for one bottle of beer (bottle conditioned specialty beer mind you) it'd take a while for me to collect 40 of them!

On second thought... I think Fischer is only 1.45€ and comes in a brown swing top pint pot. It's a bit strong for a session beer though.

Hmm... popping to the shops this evening ;) ;) ;)
