do you put the red cap on the air lock back on ?

I had the same question. Just looked closer at the cap and its perforated. This cap at least designed to stay on.

For what it's worth, the guy in my LHBS advises chucking the red caps away.

I usually keep then on, but have lost one at the moment and doubt it is much loss. These days I spray star san into the airlock rather than water.

I have a small bottle of very cheap vodka to fill the airlock so anything that gets in will die happy.
