Until the home brewing bug struck again I use to drink very little beer. What with my job and need to drive ( only driver in house ) etc etc I stopped drinking any large amounts of beer/lager, and settled into a routine of an occasional dark ale/stout/bitter with a meal and a nice malt whisky when the mood struck me.
I also found that drinking commercial beers and lagers made me feel slightly ill. I'd still be burping 2 or 3 days after a can or tow and could still taste the so called brew. It got to a point I was to all purposes....(whispers... tea total) apart from social occasions.
Since returning to making my own I've found I yet again enjoy a pint or two and I'm not talking to excess here, but the stuff I'm making suits MY palette and does not seem to effect me in any bad way. Of course I think I would suffer if I drank " over my limit " but as for normal drinking, I'm not feeling bloated or excessively windy my appetite is better with a half pint or two and I'm not seemingly suffering any ill effects.
Have any other alcoho... sorry beer Connie Sewers noticed this ? Is it a mind thing ( cos I made it ! ) or does home brew have that " magic " ingredient which prevents the nasty noxious things having a marked effect on us.
Of course home beer is usually but not always stronger and yes If I drunk over " my limit " I would expect to suffer. but in normal drinking sessions I am feeling a whole lot better from head to stomach to bowe.... well you know.

I'm only brewing from kits ass yet, but have noticed I drink less than when I was buying it, and by 'ell it tastes better.

I also seem to be healthier, more prepared to get off my arse and do things, besides just brew more booze that is :)
