Hi all

I need to use up a Golden Glory DME extract kit. It states (see photo) that I have to steep the 165g grain pack for 30 mins in 6 litres of water, then dissolve DME and hops. Then add to FV with added cold water. However, as a new owner of the grainfather I'm considering boiling the full amount of water in it as it's easier.
So am I right in assuming that I can just bring 22 odd litres to a boil in the GF, steep grains, add hops (when required) and DME, cool and transfer to FV? Is it advisable to add DME to boiling water? Thanks for any help!

Here are the instructions

Not got a gf but can't see why not. There may be a difference in the ibu if you change the boil volume so if you have the aau of the hops I'd just put it all through the calculator as extract to see.

Maybe I'll just boil up the 6 litres but do a simple sparge on the 165g of crystal malt. Will probably add just 2 litres of sparging water. Calculations are not my forte!

I wouldn't use your grainfather for this. It is designed to work with grain bills of 4 kg plus, unless you have the micro pipework, which can use 2kg. I would just follow the kit instructions.

Edit. Having re-read the kit instructions, you could use your grainfather, but as a 30 min steep at ~65°C with the grains in a bag, don't bother sparging, go straight to boil. Either use the malt pipe with just the bottom plate in place or tie the bag to one of the spring clips to keep it off the element.

You need a pan big enough to boil the specified amount for the time required to utilise the hops. And I'd go with the advice offered above regarding the gf. ..

There is just no point is boiling the full volume with this kit, you'll just waste a load of time and electricity heating that volume of water up and then cooling it down afterwards.

I've done a fair few of these, just do it in a stockpot as per the instructions: a 12L or 15L pan will do. The grains are adjunct grains so no need to mash or sparge, 30mins steep as suggested.

Yeah I think I'll just use the grainfather for the grains as it states that I have to keep the temp between 65-70. That's obviously muchy easier with the grainfather. Then I'll just transfer to a pot. Sound ok?

It's only a 30 minute steep for the grains;wrapping the pot you use in a couple of thick towels etc will be enough. I think you are only extracting colour and flavour not sugars.

True, I have a 15 litre cool box. Reckon that will do the trick!

you can add some just boiled water direct to the fv and bung your dme in. The only issue I find with DME is the steam from the hot water in the fv makes it stick around the packet as you pour. If you mix dme with cold water you don't get this but it's harder to dissolve and more likely to clump. I always do a reduced boil with my DME brews (not required if totally factory sealed dme) eq. muntons. some dme is split from 25kg sacks and re-packaged. I wouldn't bung the whole recipe in the grainfather as stated before a full boil length and then a chill takes longer. topping up the fv with chilled, near frozen water gets you to pitching temperature much quicker. As for the grains I put those in a casserole pan in an oven preheated to the Slow setting and the hold their temp pretty well.

It states that I have to boil the DME for 50 mins. So you would mix the DME in an FV with hot water, then back into the pan?
