And now brewdog are doing beer kits.

At £35 I would expect a 100l kit

It seems they have a few reciepe kit packs. Jack hammer, dead pony, 5am saint, punk IPA.

To be fair it works out at 87p a pint. Its just that we know we can make it cheaper if we just bought the raw ingredients ourselves. Having said that though because of the massive hoping rates of say Punk IPA has anyone costed up how much it would cost to make it by going to a online shop?

On MaltMiller, the 5am saint comes out just over £20, not including yeast and delivery. Or at least it would if they had Simcoe and Nelson Sauvin in stock.

Have you seen how much hops goes into Jack Hammer?

I costed out a full batch from the recipe using the geterbrewed customised grain kit and it came to £33.31 before delivery, so I'd say it's a pretty good price for a branded ready to go kit, considering there's no hassle finding the correct grains and making sure all the hops are in stock etc.

I've already done a clone of 5AM and got the ingredients for Dead Pony Club ready to go from the DIYDOG recipes.

I'll probably get the Jackhammer kit to try, although full disclosure I get a shareholder discount too!

Thanks for that I was wondering about all those hops in the average BD reciepe and how much the push the costs up.

Overall I think reciepe kits are good if you just brew every so often as everything is (should be) in the kit so no waste.

There are a lot of different varieties of hops in the recipes, but not much volume. It's a mission for one of us to go out and buy 8 different packs of hops, and yes we might spend 20 quid in 50g or100g bags, but we'd only use about 1/5th of them and still have loads left over for other brews.

I know this because I've got a box of leftover foil hop bags in the freezer having recently gone out and done exactly this for the Punk recipe.

For example the Punk IPA recipe only uses 150g of hops total, which is what, a fiver's worth? £7.50? Then another £10/£15 for grain, max. So the actual value even at eBay prices is going to be nearer £20.

The usual home brewers bane then. Loads of half used packs of hops in the freezer

There's 5 varieties and 467.5g of hops in Jack Hammer!

I agree with what you're saying though, I think these kits will be a brilliant introduction for new brewers without any hassle sourcing ingredients or wondering what to do with the leftovers.

I've been using geterbrewed's custom grain kits for the last few brews and found it very convenient not having to weigh everything out on brew day (apart from splitting up the hop quantities) and not having lots of leftover stuff, so I'm already a convert to the kit idea.

I've just ordered the Jack Hammer kit to see what it's like, although it'll be a wee while before I have a pot big enough to brew it in.

They must have long since passed the point where the extra hops are having any effect. Next comes an ever more surreal array of additives I guess. Truffle and chilli wotsit IPA, served in a gold rimmed B&O speaker cone.

Makes me wonder whether it's not going to turn into another 1980s New World wine experience. Take what Europe had spent centuries honing to near perfection, use a different climate to exaggerate every aspect of the process and produce old world wine to the power of ten. Serve up 16% abv jam that is so overoaked that all you can taste is pencil shavings then when surfeit kills the market completely go back to calling it Californian-Bordeaux-style-Merlot and hope no-one remembers.

Does this make me a cynic?

I recently completed a Punk IPA Clone and am busy fermenting a Dead Pony Club Clone both via homebrew shop.

DPC came out around £25 all in for 20L. I have a little malt left over but who doesn't want Cara Malt to have in the cupboard! Smells amazing!

Love this view. I'm just about to brew a brewdog Simcoe, and a punk IPA all the engredients which I bought from Get er brewed (Ireland) Total cost with delivery by parcelforce £45.They do custom brew kits to order. Just Google Get er brewed. Best site been on service amazing. Happy brewing

Doesn't the malt miller do a son of punkie recipe for 2 batches for 30 quid.

Ramblingdean on ebay offers something similiar for 20 odd without the grain.

I once suggested to an online seller maybe selling custom amounts of hops there response was it's too much effort for a low margin
