Hi all,

What's the difference between a 1 can and a 2 can kit?
I know the 2 can kits are premium kits but what i mean is, if you add DME to the 1 can kit
instead of sugar would it not be as good as the 2 can kit?

If it would be then a half decent 1 can kit with 1kg of DME would work out cheaper than one of the premium 2 can kits!

...damn!

Sensible answer then. No. Think about what it takes to create each type:

1 Can kit has half the sugars, all the malt colour and flavour notes and all the hops in one can.
2 Can kit has all the sugars, all the malt colour and flavour notes and all the hops between two cans.

To create the 2 can kit is easy - you produce the wort to the recipe then condense it. (Within the bounds of the technology of course, it will be slightly different from a wort that goes straight to making beer).

To create a 1 can kit you need to effectively double up the colour, the distinctive flavours from the malt and all the hops. To my mind anyway, that is something that is sub-optimal. Again, I can't claim to know what the concentrating process does to the flavours but if you were making a beer with that sort of flavour profile (really malty and really bitter) then you would be looking at something that would take a lot of care and effort and skill to get right. For it to dilute down and make a nice "normal" beer then I would imagine that the tollerances are pretty tight. Any weirdness introduced to the flavours during canning are going to be amplified by the concentration of the flavour compounds in the 1 can kit.

I think....

Correct. There are good one can kits out there. Coopers seem to do good stuff (the Irish stout's a belter), Better Brew are good too.

The reality is that the ratio of "good 2 can kits/all 2 can kits" is higher than the ratio of "good 1 can kits/all 1 can kits".
