Hi anyone got any idea where I can get some screwcaps to fit 1gal demijohns. I won 14 on the great freecycle, but about 3 of them have screw type tops, that corks or bungs just don't fit! There about 1&3/4" in diameter and a very coarse thread.
Something like the old metal oil cans used to have. Iv'e shaved some rubber airlock bungs, but would prefer the proper caps to use for long term storage. Cheers!

Are they the same size as the large spring water bottles that you find in the supermarket. I bought a couple of 5L spring water bottles and use them to brew wine for my wife while I always brew in a 23L FV.

Hi W, I don't think you will find them m8 as i have looked for ages without luck.
Use them for fermenting short term with your shaved bungs & use some of the regular type that usual rubber bungs fit
to store long term wines that way you will utilise them all. :cheers: ken.

I've just done a simple google search for "rubber bungs" and found a site that will do a pack of 5 bungs for just over 14 quid, they would need drilling though.

***edit*** I've just looked again and these come with a 5 mm hole at no extra cost if you want.

I haven't posted a link as I'm not sure if its allowed.

I'm a div :oops: :oops: :oops: . I've just realised you are after screw tops, not bungs. Doh!!!!

Something like this?

I don't suppose you want 2000 though...

I'd be looking at containers all round the supermarket for soemthing the right size, though I guess your demis will be imperial and all modern stuff is metric. The thread pitch might be weird too.

Do you know any modellers (or are you up to it yourself) who might be able to make a cast of the thread and mould you some?

{EDIT}
Had a bit of a Google, suppliers to science are your best bet, there are deffo 45mm caps out there, which is 1 3/4" as near as dammit. Whether the thread would be right is the thing. You might have to chat with their sales people by email. Places that supply schools would be cool with tiny quantities. I googled "45mm screw cap". Soem of the websites are awful, but you ought to find something.

Cheers for the replies,oldbloke the link has a request for samples think I might just give it a try!!
Other than that the search continues!! (or someone I know has a lathe so might see if he can knock me up some, or modify the rubber ones) :cheers:
