its a very clicky forum iv tryed to ignore it but i cant not no longer a short time ago i asked about a kit i was doing... and i got a answer of you went over to the dark side why are you messing with kits again
I hate seeing that sort of answer to a question like "How do I improve this kit", there are a multitude of techniques that can be applied to making beer from Sweet Wort onwards and they make a massive difference to the end result. I proved this to myself last year when I did two kits, and was mightily impressed . . . . as were the people I gave them to without telling them they were a kit!!

Stay Mick

Hi Tony,

I've just come across this post above in the snug regards Mick and have posted accordingly and e-mailed Mick.
Can you elaborate on those involved please Tony as I don't get on the forum as much as I used too and I'm out of touch in reality.

Cheers

J.P

Stay! I've found this to be one of the nicest forums that I've been on.

Where ever you go, you will always have find that opinions are like a***holes, everyone has one. Just a shame some people will refuse to change their way of thinking. I don't think I've really seen it on here though.

Years ago, I joined a car forum as I had a problem with a car. Generally, it was a nice, friendly place. I then joined another forum, there was a rivalry between the two and most members were either extremely rude and offered no help at all, all because I joined the other forum first (over a year earlier). It's pathetic, and they are just jealous keyboard warriors.

Hear hear! I brewed 20 or 30 kit beers from the cheapest (Youngs Harvest) through to the top end premium jobs (like Ritchies Festival) and with the exception of Burton Bridge Porter managed to produce good and often excellent beer. Like your experience, Tony, I was plying beer loving chums with this stuff and towards the end one AG brewer asked if I had sneakily started brewing AG... He then proceeded to demolish four or five pints of Better Brew Midland Mild... :D

It is a simple fact that a carefully brewed (good) kit can produce beer that can easily hold its own against an AG beer.

It is also a simple fact that kit beer brewing just works for some people and some circumstances (as it did for me while I lived in a little flat) and AG just doesn't for any number of reasons (gear overload, time pressures, space pressures...). And for what it's worth I also think that (because I believe in the concept of progressive learning) every new brewer should brew a goodly number of kits even if their intent is to move to AG in the future. Learn parts of the process, then add more parts...

I reckon that, when offspring #2 makes his or her appearance, if I haven't got suitably stocked up I will whack on a few kits (from a very select list...) to keep stocks of decent beer up without the time investment...

So at the moment I don't brew kits anymore, but I will always stand up and defend kit beer and those who brew it (and even more so those who take great care to make it the best it can be.

+1 Vote stay Mick.

I enjoyed the early Wherrys we did at the same time and discussed on the forum and I've enjoyed reading your Brewdays. I'm another happy kit-tweaker who has no current plans to go AG.

Now't wrong with doing kits Mick.

I'm lucky and have a full ag setup but i still bought 2 kits from Wilko's yesterday as they were on offer. I'm looking forward to doing them as soon as I've a free fermenter.

+1 for Mick to stay

+1 to stay

Nothing wrong with kits at all. I tried one of my wherries that I did a year ago last night, had forgotten what a nice beer it is, still got about 8 bottles of the various batches to try too!

I've got brew assistant #1 due very soon and like Calum will happily switch back to doing kits if stocks are low and I don't have the time to do an AG brew.

Mick, forums are full of people with opinions, some are better at expressing them than others. Forum life doesn't suit everybody, it can be disheartening to hear the same old rhetoric tripped out time and again when for whatever reason it isn't appropriate to you. We should all be here to have fun, get along, enjoy banter and swap tips and information. However, if its getting you down then its not worth it, this is a hobby FFS. There is no need to have your account deleted, you can just stop using the forum, or just take a break from it. Most people would rather you stayed but you should do what is right for you.

I am new to this forum Mick and your posts and comments are amongst those that i enjoy the most. Peoples opinions on how you brew beer are just that, opinions, not Gospel. I am coming back to Home Brewing after a long absence and i am kits all the way. Your posts and photo's and general enthusiasm really cheer me up and i love reading about your progress. I was fully AG before so whats said here concerning methods is of "interest", not something i have to follow, same applies to opinions. There is a huge amount of sound information in this Forum on all types of brewing, there is room for us all, so please don't take a slighty "off" reply to heart.

Stay..and keep posting.

just a quick FYI mick

I have just got my first beer kit, finally made the move to beer from wine

ran down to wilco this morning and got the last discounted ale kit :-)

no need for me to invest in any more kit, I have everything I need in my wine kit :-)

well I don't have any keg but I can use recycled bottles :-)

BIAB pot has been moved down my to get list

I would prefer a fruit press for more efficient juice extraction

thanks for this thread, I dont have time or money for more than kit beer

and look forward to many fine kits in the future :-)

I will be checking your threads out for tips and advice on this transition :thumb:

I do hope you will be around if I have any problems !

I've only just read this post as I've been hectic all week and the other admin are otherwise engaged at the moment, so I'll have to post this without consulting them.
I'm really disappointed that you've been made to feel the way you do Mick and Tony.
I'd also like to point out that there's nothing we can do unless we know there's a problem, a simple pm or e-mail to let us know is all it takes.
If you let things build up they often become bigger problems than they are and quite frankly you do not come on a forum to be made to feel this way, it's meant to be a pleasure.
I also don't see why there should be any talk of brain washing ...totally not required, just like saying why bother with kits go AG.
We are all here for different reasons and we should respect others view points.

I'll pm you Tony and Mick.

Here here.

There are an awful lot of people on forums that love to tell everyone that their way of doing things is the only way. Whilst the internet is great for getting folks' opinions on things, by and large I think you get to learn who to trust and who is just BSing.

Re: kit beers vs AG vs anything else? I imagine *most* people on this forum wouldn't be able to discern a well brewed kit for a well brewed AG beer in a blind tasting. I love AG brewing, but there have been times when I've tought about how good it would be to bash out a beer in under an hour, not have to clean out my MLT and all that rigmarole. A close friend who I have sort of mentored brews the THC kits, albeit with additional hops and his beers have all turned out great. It's ALL about the fermentation & sanitation. In my opinion.

Don't worry about it Mick, and keep on asking questions and sharing your experiences.

I think I would miss you, and realistically, AG brewing takes up precious drinking time!

sorry guys i was going to stay and just not post as often .. but it wouldnt change anything
so im off ... :thumb: .
regards mick... :hat:

Unfortunately Mick has decided to deactivate his account, I have done as he asked.
I also asked if he could let me know why he felt the way he did and to point me to the direction of posts in question, with the hope that the info would help us prevent this situation from occurring again, he chose not to reply to that.
This is your forum and unless we know that a situation needs addressing there's nothing we can do about it

i think this is one of the better forums iv used not just for brewing but for many(shooting, rc, smoking, vaping) i have been admin and mod on a few and know how hard it is to keep everyone happy. you cant fix a problem if you are not told about it.
mick all the best
