Agreed!

My solution would be to let them live in squalor with some blankets for heat, candles for light and everything else they can sort out themselves. Another addition would be for them to do actual work that would benefit society eg re-building roads, cleaning up delapitated areas etc.
I don't agree with the squalor, basic yes, squalid no. As for putting them to work couldn't agree more, especially for the general prison population of thieves & scumbags, might even teach them a bit about hard work. Probably not going to work for Huntley and the like who shouldn't be seeing the outside ever

When I mean squalor I mean very basic living quarters and not eg. living in the equivalent of a sewage pipe but that could be fit for the likes of Huntly etc.

They should defiantly be made to work. Why the council employ people like bin me and recycle people I don't know. Not that they don't do a good job cos they do. But I'm sure there would be some way of getting in mates to do it or some other council job that could be over looked by a prison guard.

Have them work as long as it doesn't put anyone out of a job but could you see the government not using that as a cost cutting method

Ironically if somebody has actually been rehabilitated and are back in society after serving their time it annoys me when people with criminal records can't get a job as they are being punished a second time around.(Depending on the offence)

Obviously some can't ever be rehabilitated (paedophiles, child pornographers etc) and have to be monitored permanently.

But the individual who committed a crime eg punched somebody who then died as a result of where they fell and the individual carries out their sentence, they should be assisted in getting back to normality if they are remorseful and taking other mitigating factors into consideration.

How many people re-offend and end up in prison because they don't have a chance once released or by having a criminal record.

In a nutshell help those who want to help themselves and are truelly remorseful for their actions.

mm yeah, I can see that happening too, government announces prisoners working, which would be generally popular. 12 months down the line thousands of council workers are redundant

.
What we need here is something closer to the US system where there are degrees of murder, as you say there is a huge difference between someone who kills someone in a fight almost by accident (although if you're fighting you are responsible for the consequences) and someone who with pre-meditation abducts, rapes and then murders people (children or adults). I'd be in favour of a life sentence being something that was not mandatory for murder as it is now but was reserved for the worst category of murderer and then did mean life..with no prospect of release. 'Lesser' murderers could then serve something closer to the 13 years that is an average life sentence today.

well. let me put my copy of the daily mail down and i will get on my soap box

i totaly agree with the death sentence, and will quite happily do it if they need a new person to flick the switch, i can never see it happening again tho as there are far to many idiots in controll.

i also very whole hearted belive and would install the day after i move into number 10 is the americian three strikes rule system.

i would also remove almost all the softy stuff from the prisons.

what realy gets my goat is these people are quite happy to totaly violate my human rights, safety at home , not stealing, not being shot etc.
yet as soon as it goes the other way they bleat like mad that there human rights are being violated cause they cant play on there play staions.

prisons should be hard and should be "none welcoming" .

i would also start by kicking a lot of the old fart judges out too and as for the sentencing well lets start with doubling all of them and stop parole, life should mean life,

now i am finished i am off to my daily mail again!!
