what could you use to safely de scale the elements in the ss pots :

I use a pan scourer, however I must admit I do not have hard water.

My first boiler used a kettle element which needed scrubbed after every boil or it would trip out.
I used a nonstick pan green scourer and lost of elbow grease.

Citric acid works very well (lemon juice will also work) or you could try caustic soda which also works a treat

Not under normal use, ie, not left for more than a few hours. I tend to heat my cleaning/descaling solutions up, to speed up the process.

You can get citric acid quite reasonably on e-bay, it's the 'main' ingredient in 'bath bombs'

I use Lidl W5 lime scale tablets, eight tablets for a £1.

Use 4 tablets and boil for 20min then let them steep for an hour, main active ingredient is citric acid.

Tend to do this every 3rd or 4th brew and scrub after every brew with a nylon brush

Citric acid solution soaked overnight will be fine, you can also use calgon, or the lidl stuff, I used to service sauna and steam room heaters regularly a few years ago in one of my many jobs, and we always used citric acid, and it used to work a treat even in very hard water areas such as round Portsmouth and Chichester.
