I used to use the Guinness yeast from the bottom of their bottles a few years ago - It was excellent... Does anyone know if they still bottle condition any of their beers - I would love to get hold of some of the yeast again :thumb:

I believe that the Guinness for the UK market is pasteurised, whereas the bottled Guinness for the Irish market contains viable yeast.

I'm going over to Dublin on Monday for Paddy's Day so will try to find out. My pal Liam runs Ireland's largest all-Irish brewery (The Porterhouse Brewing Company) so he should know. He also brews the best stout I have ever tasted (Wrassler's XXXX) - I hope to get details of the grainbill, hopping schedule and a sample of the yeast off him if I can get him drunk enough.

You wouldn't go far wrong getting some yeast off a bottle of Wrassler. I got some last year (unfortunately it got infected before I could use it)

A recipe would be nice, in their literature I think they encourage people to try and clone it and I think they publish the ingredients (but not the recipe).

Have a good one. :thumb:

It was a fantastic trip, but seeing as it was St Paddys week, sooo busy. I didn't get a chance to see Liam (the MD) for yeasties and recipes so spent my time rediscovering some pretty splendid beers. This is not a problem because it gives me an opportunity to go back and correct the oversight (several times).

Ken, the manager at the Temple Bar Porterhouse pub, presented me with some brilliant beers (and a couple of not-so-brilliant ones) for Mrs Luckyeddie and I to enjoy back at our hotel - and enjoy them we did.

One superlative beer I had never tried before was Boon Geuze Mariage Parfait. If you ever get the opportunity to try it, go for it. It is the most remarkable Belgian Lambic I have ever tasted.

Has anyone tried to reclaim yeast using Shepherd Neame 1698?

Just incase anyone is interested, I made a yeast starter 2 days ago with 1698 and it looks like it has viable yeast, as it is bubbling slowly now :D Just have to wait and see if it is any good :hmm:

This is a great idea, especially if we can get the info from this thread into a proper database!

I stumbled upon this when I first started brewing about 6 years ago.... it was old then and is even older now.... not
sure how relevant it'll still be to be honest, but maybe worth a look:

Hey Brewedout...did you give this yeast a go, thinking of giving it a go myself :wha:

Cheers!

Ok we'll start one off then :thumb:
As Wez said I can confirm that the yeast from Chimay Red is the primary strain and A T can confirm that Chimay blue is also the primary strain.
A big thumbs up from me also for the yeast from Coopers Pale Ale.

Tubby Shaw, could you give an idea of the qualities of those Chimay yeasts please? I think they're the bottles the cat didn't wreck when she knocked my precious collection off the shelf

Hi Oz,

I didn't get the chance to try how good the yeast was in the end as events conspired against me before I could get my brewday in! However if you have a look in Jims beer kit website someone has used 1698 successfully (I forget their name). Needless to say, I shall be trying again ASAP!! Let me know how you do if you beat me to it. Thanks :)

Ahh...."events"...they should be banned.

I picked up some Thwaites "nutty black" and "old dan" today from a Morrison's (both bottle conditioned), haven't googled for them yet, but the Old Dan label implies (to me, at least) that it's bottled with the primary yeast. Might give it a go :wha:

i second that MD I used yeast from a breckonshire beer cask to make a small batch (30L) it worked great, didnt work with butty bach but not sure if it was my method at the time.

has anyone had any luck with s n pa yet?

Recently had good results with Wye Valley yeast, from a bottle of Golden Ale. Took ages to clear but seems to have worked well in a cascade/amarillo pale ale, OG1041.

Also just bottled a porter fermented with Fuller's yeast from a bottle of Bengal Lancer and a taste from the bottling bucket seemed good enough :thumb:
