Has anyone compiled a list of bottled beers suitable for reusing yeast sediment, or those that have been successful reused, and are not secondary conditioning yeast ? Think it would be useful. If not already done how about we start here and see what can be built up. Will definately tempt me to try some if i know they have already been used successfully by innovative homebrewers from this forum.

I agree, I'd love to have a go with some primary bottled yeast but am never sure what I should or shouldn't use. I know Tubby Shaw and A T have recently used the yeast from a Chimay Red but recording that sort of info on one most is a cracker of an idea.

Nice one OG :thumb:

Ok we'll start one off then :thumb:
As Wez said I can confirm that the yeast from Chimay Red is the primary strain and A T can confirm that Chimay blue is also the primary strain.
A big thumbs up from me also for the yeast from Coopers Pale Ale.

Schneider Weisse is also the Primary strain . . . and the only wheat beer not filtered and reseeded with a lager yeast ;)

I used Worthington white shield for years untill I discovered liquid yeast. Always with good results.

Cock up on the liquid yeast front so I`m off to Tescos tomorrow to look for suitable yeast for next weeks brew. Little while back I used Youngs Special London, bit slow to start but did the job. So interested to know if anyone has tried any others available. Unfortunately they have stoped selling White Shield.

The yeast in the WW/Shield bottle is a lager strain though I belive.

I was looking in Graham Wheelers book "Brew your own British Ale" yesterday and was reading about taking yeast from bottled beers and it it says that CAMRA's "Good Bottled Beer Guide" will give you an Indication of suitable donor bottles for taking yeast from, it also says some bottle conditioned beers may contain dead yeast due to the brewers pasturising the bottles after they have been conditioned to stabilise them.

UP

I don't think this is very up to date, but might be of some use

A list here would be great anyway.

edit:
Hopback Crop Circle certainly has yeast sediment in the bottle and I think it is the primary strain from a little reading on t'interweb. Also it is currently £1 a bottle in Booths.

I tink I'm correct in saying that bottles from Rochefort are the primary strain! :thumb:

I used to use the Guinness yeast from the bottom of their bottles a few years ago - It was excellent... Does anyone know if they still bottle condition any of their beers - I would love to get hold of some of the yeast again :thumb:

I'm pretty sure Hogs Back Brewery's T.E.A (Traditional English Ale) is primary too. Damn fine beer too!

Result of my trip to Tescos was 2 bottles of Young`s Bitter, first time I`ve seen it in bottles and it`s bottle conditioned. Now fermenting nicely. Took 2-3 days for starter to kick in but took off well when pitched.

Did anyone do this database? I've tried seaching but I cannot find it? Has anyone tried St Austells Admiral yeast?

Not that I'm aware of, it is hard to keep a reliable source as these things change. I guess somebody could set up a wiki.

I've successfully cultured and used yeast from Fullers Bengal Lancer and Brakspear Triple. I liked the results (used in a porter and strong smoked ale respectively) but I can't guarentee that they aren't bottling strains.

I've made a starter from Proper Job which is the same strain I think - seemed all good but didn't brew for some time and didn't use it. I can't see why it wouldn't be good!

Well, I've just (half an hour ago) tasted a beer I brewed with Duvel yeast - utterly magnificent. It was just an experiment, but it was one which paid off big time. I have some sealed Chimay White bottles in the fridge from a session I had last week, just waiting for me to feed them precious Belgian yeasties some lovely lovely wort, and tonight I am going to polish off a couple of bottles of Westmalle Tripel - and they will get the same treatment.

Westvleteren (many rate WV12 to be the best beer in the world) uses Westmalle yeast.
