Is it neccessary or is it just used to darken the colour of the beer?

J jamesb Landlord. Joined Oct 16, 2008 Messages 842 Reaction score 5 Location Axiom Brewing Jul 8, 2010 #2 It's mainly used for colour. You can either leave it out or substitute for black malt.
