Dark Malt?

I have GW British Real Ales book and some of the recipe's use small amount of dark malt but I can't seem to find any online to buy and use. Is it neccessary or is it just used to darken the colour of the beer?

It's mainly used for colour. You can either leave it out or substitute for black malt.
