Awrite?

I've acquired 100g of first gold hop pellets, which I was going to use to dry hop a stout, but forgot to put them in.

Hey ho...

Anyhoo, I would love to brew a BrewDog Zeitgeist clone, and was wondering if I could substitute the cascade for first gold? Both are described as fruity, zesty and spicy, so I can't see why it wouldn't work.

Anyone have any experience of these? I did search but could only find one 3 post thread from 8 years ago which wasn't much help.

Not a replacement for Cascade as they lack the intensity and have an orange flavour/aroma rather than the grapefruit of Cascade. A nice hop, though, and I wouldn't be discouraged from giving them a go with that Brewdog recipe, which isn't heavily hopped anyway. Crack on.

In fact, what I think I'll do is just get the right hops for the Zeitgeist clone and use the First Gold in a wheat beer. The orange flavour and aroma made me think of Hoegarden and Blue Moon, and I haven't made a wheat before :)

I regularly use both Cascade and First Gold in my beers, and have two Prima Donna alias First Gold hop plants in my garden. In my view they are quite different. The Cascade is very much a citrussy 'New World' hop whereas the First Gold is much more like an English hop, indeed if you look the link below you will see it lists EKG as one of First Gold's substitute, and whereas Cascade's citrus can be very pronounced the fruit in First Gold is not.

Although Cascade is also bred from an English hop. Fuggle.

There are some similarities in the oil content, although Cascade significantly has more myrcene.

Mind made up, I'll use the First Gold in a wheat along with some Saaz I'll have left over from a SMaSH I'm doing soon, then get some Cascade for the Zeitgeist as per the recipe.

Cheers all :)
Ooh, ooh, ooh, i just brewed a witbier today using first gold..... Obviously it'll be a while until i can say how it turns out but I'm optimistic.....

FWIW, i bought the pack of hops originally for a GH porter, then i used them in a GH mild (both considering in the bottle ATM) and i have a pale ale that's been in the FV 10 days.

So come to think of it, i haven't actually drink any of my beers yet that use first gold! :laugh8: But judging by the descriptions of how it tastes i think it could be a really interesting hop, plus it's British (right?) and inexpensive - a nice antidote to all those trendy American hops athumb..wink...

First Gold are great, I use them as my late hops in my bitter as does @foxbat. I don't have much experience with Cascade but I doubt they'd be similar as FG are very English in character. I'm going to double or triple up on the quantities in my bitter (which has 15g at 10 min and 20g at 0 min for a 23L batch) and use them in my next pale ale to see what they can do.
