Lol I've used el cheapo bleach to sterilise homebrew stuff for 30+ years and I'm still alive. Honestly can't remember any brew getting an infection and my ale and wine turns out at least as good as anyone else's! Everything else on the market is there to extract money needlessly.

I used to use el cheapo bleach, but if left to soak for extended periods it breaks down the plastic, making it more likely to stain and hold smells and bacteria/mould in future. I also haven't been able to find a bleach without scent, detergent or fillers in recent years. I use the best I can find to remove stains from equipment, but it takes a lot of cleaning afterwards before it can be used for beer.

Leave the oxyper so it breaks down and the released oxygen will get rid of the odour without damaging anything or leaving a scent or harmful deposit of it's own.

The trick is to put plastics away bone dry, then they only need a quick splash of extremely diluted el cheapo bleach and a rinse before use. I've been using the same plastic vessels for more years than I care to remember - no infections, ever, and no degredation of plastic. The bleach? 'Value' stuff from any supermarket, about 25p for two litres.

I know I'm the one who started this bleach hijacking of the thread, but to be honest I hardly ever use bleach for sanitising. In fact I don't use chemicals at all. I use boiling water for everything. Works for me.

I apologise for starting a bleach related flame war, I didn't realise that was a thing.

I'm going to try a 2 day soak with Oxy followed by a few weeks airing out as nobody has suggested there are any negative consequences for doing that.

Does anyone have an opinion on whether the musty smell actually matters or not?

For clarification I can only smell it after I've left the lid on for a while so it's not super strong.
