Hi there,

This might be a stupid question so I am braced for that. All my malt substitute charts list Caramunich III as the closest Weyermann substitute for Crystal 60L. However if I check with my supplier (https://eshop.sladovna-kounice.cz/Karamelovy-slad-III-Caramunich-Malt-III-d25.htm) they list Caramunich III as having EBC of 150, I would have thought that i closer to a Crystal 80? The Caramunich II has an EBC of 120 listed which is closer to 60?

Does this sound right or am I totally on the wrong track and should just go by the substitute chart?

Cheers!

Editing to add that I have used both extensively already and never really noticed this....

According to Weyermann:
Caramunich I is 31 - 38L
Caramunich II is 42 - 50L
Caramunich III is 53 - 61L

According to Weyermann:
Caramunich 1 is 31 - 38L. 92 EBU
Caramunich 2 is 42 - 50L 121 EBU
Caramunich 3 is 53 - 61L 150 EBU

ah OK thanks a lot guys! I was being lazy and using the multiply by 2 method which clearly is not very accurate at all. I think I have always done this so not sure why after a few years of brewing its only suddenly occured to me! Doesnt seem like I am the first one (e.g https://aussiehomebrewer.com/threads/ebc-to-lovibond-conversion.1472/), and to be fair in the greg hughes book he does state:
"SRM is approximately equal to L; EBC is equal to SRM multiplied by 1.97"

So from that I deduced that if SRM=L and EBC=SRM x 1.97 then EBC=L x 1.97. Which it doesn't. :confused.:

So at least now I know. Caramunich III is roughly equivalent to Crystal 60, the malt comparison charts are correct. :laugh8:

In color, but not necessarily in flavor.
