just about to order some bits just wandering if I need crushed pale malt to work with torrefied wheat or un crushed.

anyone able to help? preferably before 6!

Whoops! ive sent an email asking if I can change the grains to crushed, and added a couple of packs of hops (target, northern brewer to make the postage worth while.
I ordered it five to 6 (close) so hopefully they left it

Cheers myqul

You want crushed grains unless you are going to mill them yourself[.SUNg

if they've sent it ill get them crushed by a local brewery. can't believe how cheap grains are. delivery was costing more than the entire order.
£1 for 500g Maris otter
75p for 500g of black malt.

That's why I went to AG, brewing is so cheap. Half the cost of a kit.

For very small amount of malt (500g or less) you can crush it yourself without a mill. Just put it in a zip lock bag, spread it so its one grain thickness and use a wine bottle/rolling pin to crush it - I've done 500g of munich like this when I accidently ordered uncrushed. Uncrushed malt can last months (yeast if you vac pac it) so if your only using a small amount of specialist malt it's viable. You wouln't want to do several kilo's like this though

phoned up the chap there this morn hes told me they got my email, and swapped over the malt to crushed. doesnt sound like they added the hops though but hey ho, least i can get on on with the old peculier clone

i did a misprint, it was 75p for the maris!
is the home brew shop possibly the most reasonable priced brew store in UK? i just lloked at one in bedford near me 'happy brewer' and a 3kg bag of marris otter is £8.65, thought tis was a tad steep.

Unless you specifically want MO for the biscuity taste it imparts, just use pale malt its generally cheaper. I normally buy my grain from Get er Brewed and their irish pale malt is only £1 a kilo. You can also buy down to 250g amounts of grain (one of the main reasons I use GEB)

I was planning to order from http://www.thehomebrewcompany.co.uk later. Maris Otter is 64p for 500g, a kilo of Irish pale malt is 80p and we get 5% forum members discount too. Delivery is £6.95 but free if you spend over £70 which is all too easy to do if you are being tempted to the dark side like I am! I guess a few people have ordered from them?

i only needed it in conjunction with the torrefied wheat i want to use. id like to get rid of some crystal malt as well that ive had (in a sandwich bag, in another bag)
Got any decent recipes for 15L batches for challenger/EKG/Fuggles hops mate? i can do the calculations if u have them for bigger batches

Get er Brewed look well cheap in comparison! i needed some northern hops, for £2.20 for 100g cant complain, £2 100G target too, glad i didnt order from HBS now:thumb:

Those hops are SCREAMING English bitter. Just knocked this together. Not to stong but still approaching ESB.

OG .1.048
FG 1.012

ABV 4.7%

S04 used to give OG/FG calcs of 75% attenuation. If you used higher attenuationg yeast it will be stronger

M.Otter- 3Kg - 95%
Med Crystal 150g - 5%

Challenger 60min
EKG/Fuggles 10min
EKG/Fug 0 min 10g

I'd have to know the AA% amount to do the 60/10 min amounts but do Id do the 60 min addtion for 2/3rds and 10min addition for 1/3rd. Hopped to 34IBU togive and IBU:OG ration of 0.7

looks a nice simple one. as id be doin a partial mash I hope id be able to make up most of the pale malt with a few tins of LME, but maybe 150g of MO with 50g of TW? (15l batch)
Id prob go on a similar route with hop ratios with my last batch where I divided the amount by 23, then multiplied by 15 gets me the right amount for the smaller batch:thumb:

Didn't realize you were wanting a partial receipe, but yes you can replace as much of the MO with LME as you like and add some terrified wheat for head retention

Might try this for my first attempt not using a kit. For the partial version would more LME be needed to take account of the water content to get the same ABV?

MyQul, the Old Ale in your signature sounds interesting. Do you have a recipe for that?

Depends how much MO your going to use as to how for how much LME is then needed. I just use a brewing calculator (Brewmate) to work these things out.

The Old ale in my sig would based on the old ale reciepe in my Greg Hughes book but that one is for a ABV% of 8.7%, far too strong for my tastes so I'd tweek it to take it down to 6.5%. When I harvested both the Fullers yeast strain and the Shepard neame yeast strain the yeasts were both in bottles of old ales (Fullers 1845 and Shepard Neame 1698) and I really enjoyed the beers after harvesting the yeast. God knows when I'll get around to making one though because I've been making pseudo lagers and pale ales a lot recently
