Just a general question, I’m not at that point yet. However, corny kegs keep coming up so I googled a photo.

These look very similar to the post mix drums we had in the naffi. They were about 4 gallons though. Are they the same ones?
If so, what happens to the rest of the beer batch, or does having corny kegs mean one is restricted to four gallon brews?

if you are kegging you would typically be making 5 gallon batches, I will typically aim for a little over 20litres as with losses in the kettle and fermenter you will get an almost full keg. Ideally you want to leave a little head space this will help with carbonating

If I end up with a bit of beer left after filling a keg, I'll fill a few bottles and add a carbonation drop to each one

Probably similar if not the same things. Corny kegs were mostly used for soft drinks (Coke/Pepsi/etc.) before getting repurposed by home brewers.

As mention above they are 19L so you can either brew 19L batches or if like me you brew kits which are typically 23L then take around 6-8 500ml bottles of the fermented brew first before dumping the rest into the Corny. It's a bit of a pain but nothing like bottling an entire batch but the upside is that I stash the bottles away and have a good selection of beer to sample at Christmas or some other occasion.

I fill the corny and then if I’m doing a dark beer that will bottle condition well and keep for a while I bottle in glass, prime with some sugar and out away somewhere. These are good to to save a while or give away.

If I am doing a paler beer that I prefer to drink relatively young I put the excess in PET bottles and force carbonate the same as I do in the keg. I can then drink these before the keg is carbed and conditioned.

If I want to give any of these away I bottle straight from the keg.
