I just bought a couple of kegs and all the required accessories but I cannot get the liquid disconnect to attach to the liquid outlet.

They are ball lock corny kegs and I ordered SS ball lock liquid disconnects for them but they I just cannot get them to press down and click into place. The gas disconnects are plastic ones (SS were out of stock) and these fit on the gas line no problem.

Any ideas? I am pulling up the collar before trying to push them down.

Also, Im curious what the difference is between the liquid and gas disconnects? Both look identical and the gas one also fits on the liquid outlet.

Heres the pics. Think you might be right that I have 2 gas posts, both look the same. Is this an issue, other than the fact the SS disconnects wont fit?

See if the posts have horizontal marks on them. Only the gas post should be marked I can't make out from the pic.
Post a pic of each post so I can see the sides of them

Posts look fine. I haven't seen a gas disconnect like that before but I've only been using cornies for around 3 years.

Ok, so this morning I decided to try again and put most of my weight on the disconnect and it finally clicked into place. Guess it was just very tight and I should get some keg lube to protect the o-rings. Cheers for the replies tho.

Now to find a cheap chest freezer....

I have that disconnect and the same keg and also found it very tough to connect. It did finally clunk into place with some brewer's lube on the o-ring, the stainless steel lip on the keg post and inside the disconnect on the moving parts of the poppet press mechanism. I think but am not sure that clearance around the metal post lip was the problem and that it needed to be perfectly centered when pressing down with the collar held up to retract the inner ball bearings. I also have a pair of these and they seem to fit all the kegs I have without too much effort.

Now that you've got it on, can you get it off?

Because I know what to look for I can confirm the "posts look fine". One (liquid in) has a marginally smaller diameter than the other which should prevent fitting the liquid disconnect onto the gas post - but it doesn't! And if you make this mistake its a pain getting them apart again. Pin-locks were much better, but aren't seen much (I have both which is not an advantage).

You can see the difference in diameter by noticing the difference in a tapered waist on a post (one looks thinner). But the manufacturers also marked the spanner faces which is what you've been using.

I've had disconnects failing to connect. That was due to tightening down the post too much and causing the poppet (universal poppets) to protrude too far. That interferes with the pin in the disconnect that pushes the poppet open and makes it near impossible to push on. But I can see on the piccies your poppets are flush with the post so it wouldn't have been that. The posts seal with O-rings and don't need gorilla-like tightening.

I've used Vaseline (or the food-grade equivalent petroleum jelly) for years. I'm certainly not going to allow dodgy anxieties force me to spend a fiver on some "safe" alternative.
