Hi all,

I'm going to be Brewing the coopers wheat beer kit next week and need to get the ingredients for it. The kit recommends 500g of light spraymalt and 300g of brewing sugar but I was just wondering if anybody has done this kit before and has any altrnate suggestions as to what sugars or malt extracts to use?

I was thinking of putting a full KG of LME and also for extra body,Head and mouthfeel and wheaty taste I was going to put 500g of spraymalt "Wheat" in,then when it stops fermenting "Dry Hop" it for maybe a week? Any opinions would be greatly appreciated. I have a thick skin BTW so can I take any criticism that comes my way

Cheers in advance Guys

Ancor

I made this with just sugar, it's very watery and little taste, your plan sounds good. It really needs the body!

The problem with adding extra DME instead of sugar to kits is it ups the body but knocks down the bitterness, unless that isn't an issue to you.

If you're buying hops anyway you could easily counteract that by boiling a small amount of hops for 60 mins to up the bitterness! Do that and I reakon you'd be on for a cracking beer.

You won't go wrong with either wheat or pale malt.

Thanks for advice and tips guys.

In Relation to boiling the hops RobWalker,do you put the boiled hops into the mix with Ingredient kit,DME/Sugar and mix with the water before adding the yeast???

Sorry,Probably an obvious and stupid question but I'm still a bit green to all this home brewing,it's only my second attempt!!! :wha:

You can actually do either. Straight into the mix before fermentation is fine, or you can balance it up adding the water bit by bit afterwards if that takes your fancy. It's a bit more fiddly though!

hello mate - i've just bought the coopers wheat beer kit and the following; spraymalt "wheat", spraymalt "lightly hopped", DME and Wheat beer yeast

going to try

300g of lightly hopped spraymalt
300g of wheat spraymalt
300g of DME

hopefully it wont be toooo bitter and the extra 100g of spraymalt will give it a bit more oomph - last kit I tried was a lager kit with granulated sugar and although it's really drinkable it turned out a bit thin tasting

good luck with yours and try to update here - i'll let you know how mine turns out

i'm really keen on nailing a good wheat beer as me and the mrs both love a wheaty, yeasty beer!

Hi Seamus,

That sounds like a plan,I'd be intertested in knowing how that turns out so keep the updates coming. I'll let you know how mine is coming along.I'm only ordering ingredients today so it will be the weekend before I start brewing. I think I'll boil up some hops and put them in with the fermentables and then also dry hop after it's finished fermenting for about a week I reckon. I just bottled my first ever batch last night :D Coopers "CanadianBlonde" with a Kg of "brew enhancer 1" and 500g of "Spraymaly wheat". Really into this home brewing thing now, quite exciting!!!!

started this kit tonight - all went to plan and it smelt amazing

Start brewing the Coopers Wheat beer Kit on Monday (Today is Wednesday). Went quite well, and smelled and tasted promising...

Ingredients: Coopers wheat Beer kit
1KG Muntons Light Spraymalt
500G Muntons Spraymalt Wheat
300G Brewing sugar
10G Northern Brewer Hops,Boiled for 60 mins
Mauribrew Yeast WEISS 1433 (12.5 grams)

O.G. 1.048
Temp @ Adding yeast 27
Fermenting Temp: 18-20
S.G. @ 24Hrs 1.028

Seems to be brewing up nicely.Airlock Bubbling away.Tested S.G. @ 24hrs and had dropped about 20 points but I hear that's normal for wheat beer.It actually tasted quite good so very excited about this one!!!!

Best of luck with yours Seamus

Thats right Seamus,1800g of sugars.Should give it more of a kick in terms of ABV.

Cheers Pittsy.

I'll post when it's ready to let you know how it turns out. Be interested to know how yours turns out too Seamus!!! :thumb:

more oomph sounds good to me! :D

so, it's been a week now and bubbling is at a minimum - checked the s.g. and we have 1.005 - going to check again tomorrow and probably end up bottling it :thumb:

my bottle rinser and bottling wand turned up today so that's going to help massively :ugeek:

Couldn't wait to bottle it any longer! The sg yesterday was 1.004 and today it was betwixt 1.003 and 1.004 so sod it, we went for it!

So, me and the missus prepared 40 x 500ml bottles and added DME, Sugar, Coopers drops (1 in some bottles, 2 in some) and spraymalt hopped light and spraymalt wheat to the rest to see if there is any real difference to the end result ... ended up with 39 bottles :thumb:

the malt bottles definitely produced more foam when filled than anything else - we couldnt resist so we popped a bottle of the lightly hopped spraymalt after chilling it and it was superb even though it was flat!!

It had a slight ovaltine taste under the main wheat flavour and even on day 0 of bottling was a really nice beer - this is miles and miles better than the youngs harvest lager kit!!!

we've got a bottle primed with spraymalt wheat chilling in the freezing to open in an hour - talk about not being patient!!

Very pleased so far - thanks for all the help chaps - really appreciated!

Well done Seamus, enjoy :) I know all about that impatient thing.you just can't wait to get a taste of it,I'm sure once it's conditioned it will taste fab!!! :thumb:

Pittsy can I just pick your brain a bit? I have the same kit brewing that seamus has just done and I was just wondering. There seems to be some sediment in the bottom of the FV, it's been fermenting now for a bout 8 days and the O.G. was 1048 and it's only fermented down to about 1014-1015 is that normal? When i botled my last brew the same thing happened and there seemed to be a lot of unfermented sugars left at the bottom, should I give it a shake or a stir to wake up the yeast or just leave alone? It was fermenting at quite a low temp to start of with, about 18 degrees!

Cheers!

hi , 1014 from 1048 seems like your at the correct stage to bottle giving you around 4.5% vol which is ideal for a wheat (just make sure its stable by checking reading 2 to 3 days in a row before bottling and always give it a couple of extra days with heating switched off to help it settle before bottling too), and yes you always get sediment in the bottom of your FV , most beers its best to transfer to a 2nd FV so as to reduce sediment and help clear your brew but this is not wanted /needed with wheats , also 18c is perfect temp for brewing
