Hi
I have just purchased a corny keg and the associated equipment.
I am going to attempt to brew my first lager using the Coopers Oz lager kit.
Kit arrived today so will hopefully put the brew on over the weekend.
I am looking for a some guidance on using the kits then transfering it to the corny.
Do I need to use enhancers or just what the is in the tin?
How long does it need to be in the keg before sampling?
What is best pressure to set keg at when faucet is 1.5m away?
Thanks in advance

Hi @Webbym, welcome to the forum, Coopers kits are quite good but lack a bit of body and mouthfeel if not enhanced. Depends on your budget but you can use 500g of light/extra light spraymalt (DME) and 500g sugar or go in full fat with 1kg of light/extra light spraymalt (DME).

I transfer using a little bottler tap on my FV and fit a syphon onto it and open the tap when the syphon is at the bottom of the corny and fill to just below the GAS(in)dip tube, I then force carb overnight at around 30psi and it's usually ready next day (reducing C02 to serving psi) there are several ways to carb and would be best if you searched on Youtube. if you allow a week or so for it to condition it will be better.

I suggest you read this before you start your brew day.
https://www.thehomebrewforum.co.uk/...de-to-brewing-your-own-beer-from-a-kit.57526/Also the kit instructions which will recommend extra sugars in the form of Brew Enhancer or sugar or malt extract in some form. If you are unsure use kit can plus 500g of light dried malt extract (spray malt) and 500g of brewing sugar alias dextrose, and make your kit up to 20-23 litres according to how strong you like your lager.
Other will advise on the corny set up.
Finally I advise you leave your lager two weeks in the FV, two weeks to carbonate, and two weeks to condition before you drink it. If you force carb I assume that would mean four weeks to condition, corny users can advise on this too.

Few things for me to consider this week

Thanks, i will check out a few videos .
Just wanted to start with a simple kit before moving on to something more expensive.
Any recommendations?

Coopers Euro lager is ok and I like Mangrove Jacks kits, I pimp them tho' with extra hops and DME etc... My advice is to buy a 2 can kit as it is only slightly more expensive than pimping in some cases and they're usually pretty decent.

Depending on your preference in taste, I would recommend the Wilko Cerveza kit, which is a single can kit costing £12. This was my first lager style beer brews and it really turned out nice and clear and looking like lager with a slight bitter taste but not overpowering. I used a 1 kg. bag of brewing sugar also from Wilko and brewed it short to 20 litres. OG 1039, and FG 1003, ABV 4.7%. I followed the 2+2+2 procedure as recommended by terrym.

What ever you decide to brew all the best, but just get BREWING.........

Cheers for the advice.
I'm looking forward to giving it a good go!!

Do it plain. Just as the instructions say.

Then buy the same kit again, and add a spray malt.

Then buy it again and do it with spray malt and a bag of hops at the end.

Then you get an idea of the difference you can make and what it means.

Thanks for the advice, really helpful from yourself and everyone else.

I’ve done this same kit myself ( my first ever actually ) and a few more after ; ). I always brewed it with the coopers brew enhancer 2 as it always come out good, definitely leave it in the fermenter for at least 2 weeks and try and keep the temperature around 20 if using the kit yeast? This isn’t really like a nice crisp lager though if if I’m honest! But its not too bad, quite malty if my memory serves me right. Next time, get the Mexican cerveza and use the brew enhancer 2! This one is very very nice and crisp after 4 weeks in the bottle.

As for kegging, you want to siphon it from your fermenter making sure you have enough hose in the keg to minimize splashing. I always had tin foil sprayed with starsan covering lid whilst transferring ( to avoid anything nasty falling in ) once full, purge the keg a few times and hook it up to 30 psi for a couple days, disconnect the co2 purge the keg and re connect at serving pressure for a week or so? then try a sample? But realistically, it’ll take at least 4 weeks to be fully carbed and conditioned
Hope this helps

Cheers for that, definitely helpful.I use a self priming siphon for other forms of brewing, would this suffice for homebrew lager? Is a filter or strainer required to prevent sediment transfering to the keg?

Sorry I’m not familiar with a self priming siphon? and it’s been a long time since I used one too. Also I’ve never used any kind of filters, i just made sure to not to stir up the yeast at the bottom, so I moved my siphon down as the beer level was going down

Brilliant that's exactly how I use the one I have.

Just an update, I've just kegged my first brew, pressurised and in the fridge for a few weeks.
I followed the instructions on the pack measured the gravity for two days got the same reading.
Only thing concerning me is when I've used my hydrometer to measure the Alcohol content it's sitting around 0%.
Have I done something stupid and made Becks blue?
Any feedback appreciated

What was your OG and FG?

What was your OG and FG?
OG 1038
FG 1006

It's been kegged for two weeks with CO2 attached, think I've over carbed it as I'm just getting pints of froth. I've let the pressure go will leave it for 24 hours to see if it improves. When it does settle in the glass it tastes similar to fosters, not my cup of tea really but it will still get supped.
