Coopers Kits, Contradictions.

I have found two major contradictions regarding the kits.

1/ Cans - "Makes 40 Pints" - that is 18.93 Litres.

2/ Directions state Fill the fermenter with cold tap water to the 23 litre mark and mix. - that’s over 48 pints. :hmm:


If you have made one of these kits in the past and wondered why it tasted weak and thin, now you know
I would make up to 17 litres of wort for a good beer.

A litre is a pint and three quarters.
23 x 1.76 = 40.48

40 pints is 22.73 litres

Hang on, I've sussed it, you're using American pints at 16 fl.oz., 0.473 litre.
Wrong.

Morley, Coopers have used the US Pint to advertise their product "Makes 40 Pints".
Now what they have done, god knows how is to confuse the US Pint with the UK Pint and assumed it was 23ltrs, like we all would. This is wrong.
In reality, it should read "Makes 40 US Pints this equates around 19.00Ltrs."

The problem is, a litre is a litre the world over, the measurement remains the same. Pints, Gallons etc are totally different. All they have done is confuse which pint measurement they were using and convert it to the standard Litre.

A 4 Litre increase in brew length on this product (Which you will end up with if you follow the instructions) will be proven when you come to check gravity.

A US Pint = 0.473 litres. 40 US Pints = 18.92 Ltrs.

We all know that 40 Uk Pints = 23 Ltrs, but they have not used UK pints (They used US Pints).

In all the Coopers instructions they refer to litres not pints. If they're advertising in the States that they make 40pints then obviously its wrong. but hey ho you'll have your extra 8pints :grin:

Yes you will, not to a massive extent. But they are wrong. Make upto about 18.5 Ltrs next time and you will have the beer near perfect and at the correct measure/gravity (Replace the yeast of course)! :)

I'll take you word for it Pete, my to do list is very long and Coopers kits aren't on it. Did enjoy them when I did them.

How odd, I happen to have finally made up my Coopers stout kit today and it says on the side of the tin that it makes

23 litres
5 Gallons (40 pints)
6 U.S. Gallons (48 U.S. pints)

I ignored all of that and made 20l with 850g of medium spraymalt and erm "some" BKE to make up the 150g of spraymalt I had used for a starter or something

I guess your packaging is different. I think it would be fair to assume, if in doubt, that an Australian company would be using Australian weights and measures which are metric and trust thouse. I should think that historically they used UK imperial measures being part of the Commonwealth and so would tend to assume an imperial rather than US pint. I've long since lost the tiny instruction booklet so I can't comment on that.

As per themumbler i believe coopers kits are designed to make 40 uk pints, 23ltrs (ish).

Not sure where the american link comes in but thats just me!!

Technically of course if you were to cut down on the Sugar you add by 18/23 rd's and reduce the volume you made the kit up to only 18L you would end up with a better quality beer. :lol:
