well my tuppeny worth, Like you up until a couple of years ago I was lager/rted wine all the way....then I tried a real ale or 2 and decided I like them!!
Like others have said, anything badgers (champion is my preference) but if you can get either of my next two choices I highly recommend them!! Purple moose brewery snowdonia ale (or Madog) or my current favorite is Mad goose ale!!

I would also say a good place to start is one of teh badgers, old speckled hen (I hardly ever drink it but I like the old crafty hen but its a bit different) Hobgoblin.. the St Austells range are nice and hoppy (tribute and Proper Job are the common ones)

Best commercial beer I have tried recently was Adnams Ghost ship its not that strong and not that bitter but has a really nice hoppy flavour, If your in the weatherspoon and want something crazy try (unsure of spelling) a bottle of Lagunita IPA its like hop juice.

Both of those are fantastic. I like the Devils Backbone they sell there too.

Try and keep an eye out for local beer festivals. The breweries treat them as big adverts so are happy to give you a swig of whatever they've got to try and then you can buy a half or a third of whatever takes your fancy. The people on the bars are often involved with brewing the beers and in my experience happy to talk shop with any home brewers

Wonderwoman
If your trying bottles and an ASDA is round the corner their 4 for £5 offer is worth a look. And if there's some on the shelves you must try Shepherd Neames' India Pale Ale included in this offer. And there's always Black Sheep Brewery Riggwelter, or Shepherd Neame 1698 which is bottled conditioned......I could go on, and on!

Right, so... don't laugh... The reason I don't know anything about Ale is because I was told that Ale is very bitter and although I like a lager, some days more bitter than other days (especially in summer), I haven't dared to pay pub prices on something I might not like. And I wouldn't even begin to know which Ale I might like.

But I think it's time to sample a few because I think I would like ale. I like fruity hop notes etc.

So... Could you recommend me a few readily available commercial Ales that I can buy in the supermarket which not too bitter at all? I've failed to find the IBU rating on bottles...

(Now I'll go crawl in a hole)
As a general rule of thumb if you don't like them too bitter stay away from pale straw looking ales, the darker ones are less bitter, asda currently has 4 for a fiver and my fave's are wychwood piledriver/king goblin, also love the Marston pedigree, even though I brew regular I have a stock of about 40 craft conditioned commercial ales I have for a treat occasionally, real ale will really be the death of me,lol

Glad you posted the above as the thread (as they often do) was wandering off topic, away from ales that the OP could try out that aren't too hoppy
