Cold Haze...

I seem to suffer from this condition occasionally with my kit brews. After being in the fridge for 24hrs a haze appears, I know its only cosmetic and doesn't affect the beer, but how can you stop it, if at all.
Are kit made beers more prone to it than AG or extract brews ?
 
it's a protein haze, and I *think* that's why we use irish moss or protofloc at the end of the boil.... but I may stand to be corrected on that one soon!!

I don't use any finings in my beer at the end of fermentation, and I don't get chill hazes, although for all I know I may just be getting lucky there!!
 
yes I did read somewhere it was something like a protein haze and the kit manufacturers are failing to remove all proteins before canning the product... don't know if that makes sense.
 
it would, because they've done the boil for you in the preparation of the kit, so by the time it reaches you it's too late to do much about it.

Just out of interest, have read of this thread, and see just how easy it is to do a small AG brew - might be a dangerous step to take though... :whistle:
 
I think thats what it is aswell, you add protofloc tablets to help coagulate the proteins in your boil when you do all grain. So im guessing thats why it happens more with kits, i get it with most of my kits but not with all of them, ive used bentonite with a cerveza kit and thats extremely clear and doesnt get chill haze so that might be a way to go

Yes I saw it yesterday and read it with interest. Might be something to consider over winter for a bit of fun.

:lol: :lol: When I first found this forum I was a total newbie kit brewer. I learnt a lot, and although I NEVER intended to go AG, and in fact actively didn't want to even consider it, it happened anyway :lol: :oops:

Definitely worth giving it a bash - and because it's on a much smaller scale than a normal AG brew, it should be a lot less intimidating :mrgreen:
 
I get it no matter if I use Irish moss or not. So I learned to live with it. :D
