Right, I'm new to the ol' homebrew lark and have picked up a lot of tips from on here. I've got a bitter already bottled up and have got a cider in the vessel and another bitter waiting for the space to be freed up! Basically when I raided the local's recycle bin I lifted 6-8 Newqie Brown (NB) bottles which I haven't yet used. I've found out that they aren't good as the brew can go off if they are in sunlight, but how come NB doesn't go "off" or is it that it is sooo chemically altered that it's stable???

Can I use the clear bottles for a cider or are NB not suitable for homebrew?

Thanks,
dave

It is the hops so cider will be fine.

Newcastle ale has isomerised hops and so does not get light struck as badly as other beers

Nahahaaa, I thought it would be something in the mix.

I'll use the ones I've got for cider and see if I can grab some more!!!

Cool thanks,
dave

If you find a nice local pub they will likely keep bottles by for you. I am finding the Koppaberg bottles to be rather splendid. Got nearly 200 after a few weeks of collecting and having a pint whilst collecting, all good!!

I'm starting to favour the kopparberg ones too. They stack quite nicely when I'm rinsing/washing them, I went to our local today in readiness for raking up this week and most got bulmers/magners bottles! Ah well can't be choosey!!!

Hi, i always thought that clear bottles allow light to fade ? the colour of the drink. try storing bottles in a box / dark place

Your correct to say storeclear bottles in a box and in the dark but UV light will react with the Alpha Acids from the hops (at least I think it's the Alpha Acids :wha: ) and make the brew more bitter. Known as Skunking. Not sure about fadeing the Beer colour though. The commercial Breweries use Hop extract (I think thats what it is :wha: ) that dont react to UV light in the same way. That could be the right information but with the wrong facts but anyways Clear Bottles will result in a brew becoming more bitter (skunking) with time if stored in the light :D

So in summery Clear bottles are fine just keep them in the dark :thumb:

wont be more bitter but it will stink, thats why its called skunking

brown bottles stop the specific frequency of light that causes it.

newky brown is chemically forced brewed and shouldnt even be considered beer

I'll keep the clear ones for the current batch of cider and use the brown/green ones for the bitter then. All's good!

In some respects the beer is currently split for drinking 10-12 bottles in an understairs cupboard/fridge and the rest stored on a shelf at the back of my garage so pretty dark in all places.

Luckily my local doesn't sell too much NB but alot of Kopperberg so I'm happy!

Thanks,
Dave

I also use the Koppabergs but they don't look brown to me.
They are a dark yellow/green colour not that it would make much difference I suppose.

yeah they are more green than brown, nice bottles though.. nearly got all mine as kopparberg now. it's is a beautiful thing having all the same bottles.

I only had a couple of clear ones but definitely avoiding them passing them on to others for them to drink and recycle or recycling as I get all kb bottles.

I use one clear one per batch to check how the clearing is going otherwise use them for Cider or WOW.

After the conversation the next beer I came to last night in the cupboard under the stairs was a clear one... it looked and tasted rather lush although I was up at 5 this morning..... odd!!
