Cleaning hydrometers

Hi guys I was just wondering what you use to clean say a hydrometer that your only going to use for 5 seconds, my cambden tablets say put 6 in a pint of boiling water, surely you dont have to do this for everything.

Also we have loads of sodium metabisulphate at work that i could have, how much would I have to use in ratio with water.

I use that stuff for sterilising baby bottles 99p a litre from the local chemist, put a couple of caps in some water, soak for 30 mins and rinse. :drink:

I just wash mine, but then I don't put it in the fv - I draw beer off into a trial jar (100ml), test it and then drink it.

But he's still got the problem of how to disinfect whatever he uses to draw a sample, whether it's a syphon tube or a turkey baster.

Thin, ‘value’, unscented bleach, 20ml to a litre of water, 20 minutes contact time and then rinse.

1 level tsp of SodMet is equivalent to 10 CTs, so if you can pick that up for nothing, your problem is solved :thumb:

Personally, I use Videne but A probably does not have that to hand, at this stage of his career.
