I'm thinking of doing a cider kit next, what experience has anyone got with certain kits and what would they recommend?

thanks chiefstoker

Personaly i would keep away from the cider kits and use the TC recipe on this forum, as it produces top quality cider and can be adjusted to personal taste.

I had good results with Black Rock cider and Magnum pear cider (well the better half likes them anyway)

John Bull wasnt great and Youngs brewbuddy was very dry

I think as long as it's from concentrate you'll be fine, I use the ASDA's own brand.

Turbo Cider (TC) Basic Recipe for 1 Gallon

5L Apple Juice
Cider yeast or S-04 will do

Pour 4L AJ into sterilised DJ
Add Yeast

Let the initial fermentation run it course (24 - 48 hrs) then add another 0.5L AJ

Let it ferment out, buttle while still a little cloudy into strong 500ml bottles with 1tsp sugar, leave in the house for 7 - 10 days then move them somewhere cold.

Would sainsburys basics apple juice be ok? (its about 56p/litre)
Yes it's ideal :thumb:

can someone post the link to the TC recipe on here
The recipe is simplicity itself
Apple juice from concentrate, yeast (preferably cider yeast) that's it :thumb:
Using just apple juice will give you around 5.5 to 6% alcohol.
Please do not be tempted to add sugar, this will only increase the alcohol content at the expense of the quality of the drink, leading to "BAD" hangovers

I actually had a go at making cider about 18 months ago

Got 4 crates of apples from East Malling Reserch, who develop different types of apples. They selected the apples for me specifically to make cider.

Got a press and pulp master from EBay and spent all weekend pulping the bloody things

I actually got about 7 gallons from £25 worth of apples and it is stll being drunk now. down to the last gallon and went down very well with the kids girlfriends over Xmas.

A bit dry for my liking, it vitually takes the enamel off your teeth, but at 7% hey ho

Ok, been out and got my juice (25lt), how many sachets of cider yeast will i need?

Will it work with one and just take longer?

luv ya chiefstoker :wha:

Cool, in the meantime i need to tap up my mates to save their beer bottles

If this works out well for me I could be onto a winner, as my next door neighbour is an Aldi store manager.. hmm....

Thanks again

For beer bottles ask at your local to save the magners bottles for you saves them a trip and you too,or raid your local bottle bank

But they'll have 'Magners' written on them ??

Pear juice.. presumably you know where to get 100% concentrate from i guess so :hmm:

I have just spent the last hour reading the epic Brewstew Turbo Cider thread viewtopic.php?f=39&t=965&start=220

wow!! theres some science to it, thanks it was very interesting!

I dont have a corny so i cant force carbonate, I plan to just keg my 25lt (co2 sparklet type)

I was wondering if I made up about 22lt AJ and let it ferment out, for my priming sugar could I use 3lt of AJ instead of sugar to retain some of the apply flavour... would this work or am i talking b****ks?? :D

cheers chiefstoker

No you are not talking testicles
I always prime my TC with Apple Juice :thumb:

coolio tubby-shaw

I'm looking to produce something around 7% fairly clear with some sparkle - what would you suggest as regards quantities?

Fermentation Bin 25lt
Litres of AJ to ferment?
Grams of sugar?

Keg
Litres of AJ to prime
Sugar, if any?

Also, what would be the optimum temperature to ferment at?
