I'm a cheapskate, (look at my set-up I posted earlier  ). It would benefit from a pump and I don't want to pay £100+ for a March May from RS catalogue. Any cheap alternatives anyone has rigged up? I was thinking of salvage from a washing machine  . I've tried a cheapo drill pump and that leaked like buggery. Something that would run from a 12V car battery would be great, had considered windscreen washer pump but don't think it would take the heat.

Would you pay £50 ish?
Cos Norm the Cornie man does some nice compact totton pumps re badged as scotsman pumps.
I have found it brilliant :thumb:

Well Norm has one on ebay £55 +8 P&P Clicky

Well Eb it works a treat and you can restrict the input flow and output flow even though it says not to ;) And once primed it will suck to a point, so much that it collapsed a 50cm length of vossy's silicone piping into a vacuum :thumb:

I use a March May MMP-3 pump for my HERMS system, Harmony Hut has a couple for sale on ebay for £70...HERE

I've just started a trial with a 12v solar panel pump.
So the heat should be ok, it is designed to run all day at 100 degC. running it off old model train transformer so very vairable.
Got it from this chap. about £25. http://shop.ebay.co.uk/solarproject_co_uk/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p4340

First tests seem to suggest it will work, intend to be this weekend.
Only snag is it doen't seem to prime easy, I need to disconnect the outlet tube from the coil to let the wort start then all is well.

Thanks everyone, the 12V one appeals to my scrimping nature :D . Let us know how you get on with it. 7L/min unrestricted sounds alot less than the 240V ones but gotta be better than gravity alone.

They look similar to an auxilluary water pump off some modern cars.

I tried one but it was not really up to the job of pumping heavier liquids like wort.

Hope You have better luck!

Used the pump in anger yesterday. See brewday post 'every second'

Worked fine. Actually I seldom turned it up full whack.

So far I'm on the side of saying it does the job.

Looks to be quite a nice pump . . . Ideal for my Little brewery for recircing the Liquor in the HLT and pumping the Sparge Liquor :hmm: . . . I know there was a reason why I left one of those 12V Molex Connectors Attached to the Power Supply

The Totton GP 20/12 as supplied by Norm under the Scotsman label is a good pump, and at a good price. I personally have experience of them not liking restriction to the input side but they take restriction to their output very well.
The March May MMP-3 is also a very good pump, and takes extreme restriction VERY well, better then the GP 20/12. The only downside to the MMP-3 is that it is harder to strip down.

Might be worth a look here

I just fitted the solar project 12V pump with the 1/2" BSP fittings ordered from the website. Doing so, I broke it by rushing the job and not bracing the compression fitting :(

Before ordering another one I contacted the guy (Peter) at thesolarproject.co.uk and he agreed to send me another one at half price, plus a spare end cap (non BSP type) from another pump.

What a nice man.

I've yet to see how effective it will be but I've done all the plumbing and it doesn't leak (except the pump) :D
I'll post pictures to my 'evolution' thread when all done.

I saw thesepumps the other day and thought they were pretty good value for all S/S pumps, You would need to buy the extra Viton Seals and fit them to make them any good for recirc mashing and pumping boiling liquids.
