Just got mine today. What about using a cable gland to install the probe in the side of the MT. Anyone tried that? How do people install PT100's in their HLT's?

How would you fit one of these into the side of the mash tun without it leaking??

I have ordered one and it should be here early next week. :thumb:

As soon as mine is installed I will post a how to as I have a couple of ideas using a simple plumbing fitting, a washer and 'O' seal. Whole lot will be watertight and easily assembled shouldn't cost more than a few pounds. :wha:
Please do, I was just going to clip mine to the side... Be great if you could find a way how to with fittings. :thumb:

Better late than never, Here is how I have fitted the thermometer to my thermo pot.

First you will need one of these Part No. 9974 4 mm x 1/8" compression to parallel female fitting £1.45 and one of these Part No. 9966 4 mm x 1/8" compression to parallel male £1.29 both available from BES mail order or collection from Aston Birmingham if ordered in advance.

The fittings are screwed together either side of a hole drilled through the wall of the vessel with your gasket of choice, I used thread tape.

Here is a pic of the inside before I tightened the fittings fully together

The olives sit very well over the stem of the thermometer giving a water tight seal although don't be tempted to over tighten the gland nuts or you will damage the stem, one and a half turns of thread tape over the olive gives a seal finger tight if you're not feeling brave!

Both fittings need to be drilled out the full diameter of the stem as for some reason the ones I bought reduce in diameter in the middle. Use a drill which fits snugly through the olive and it will only take a second to drill both out to the correct diameter.

Looks neat, seals well and will do nicely until the next upgrade to a "Brewometer".

I drilled a slightly bigger hole in the outside of the Thermo pot to allow the fitting to sit snugly inside.

This is a really cheap and easy way of getting analogue temperature indication :thumb:

I got a similar clip on espresso thermometer from the pound shop a while back and wasn't that impressed with it. The dial is too small to read accurately and the temperature reading varies depending how far you stick the probe in. It'll be fine for other purposes but for mashing I want it accurate to 1oC.

Great advice. I have been looking at this for a while. I am more than happy with my digital jobbie for my boiler but have not been happy taking the lid off my MT.

Parts ordered and lets see...
