looking for a 2nd FV i am in the glasgow area have tried e bay and amazon all starting about 10.00pound is this about right or can i pick them up cheaper any help would be gratefully recieved thanks :thumb:

Have you got transport ? Have a look on e bay for food grade plastic buckets or hdpe barrels etc , the main cost of them is the shipping so if you can find one nearby you could go pick up . Its that or go round to restuarants and ask if they have any empty containers that foodstuffs came in - avoid oils and strong flavours though . Farmers have a fair bit of stuff supplied in foodgrade buckets of 10L and up , often with lids . Plastic jerricans of any size are good and cheap , you can cut away the top to make a bigger hole . Asda have a 40L black bin for £4 that you could put a white plastic bag , a poly bin liner into . Big hardware/homeware places have 25L white plastic "nappy buckets" that have a handle and a lid . There are plenty of cheap plastic storage crates around , many with the foodgrade knife and fork logo on for less than a fiver . On the whole try to go for polyprop with the triangle recycling stamp with a "5" in white (if in doubt), or a "2" on the blue hdpe . Many fine brews have been made in dustbins with a polythene bag as a liner !

Think laterally ! Its all out there but not necessarily labelled as "homebrewing equipment" !

Tell us how you get on and good luck mate !

where in glasgow are you? the big tesco at silverburn ( over newton mearns way) sells brewing stuff thats quite cheap. £8.99 a tin of youngs pilsner and scottish heavy = bargain.

thanks for the heads up guys especially shocker will check out all the possabilities and let you know how i got on :thumb:

got 2 improvised FV s 24litre square tub with lid 3.47 pound and a 10 litre bucket 1.00 pound all with the knife and fork and the 5 in the triangle logos bargain all from tesco extra in greenock :D

Top work , that man :thumb:

Remember that you can use a clean , sanitised cloth/teatowel /piece of bedsheet over the top of the FV for a short fermentation and that its easy to seal one up with a sheet of polythene tied on with string or a bungee cord .

Necessity is the mother of invention  and its loads more fun to make your own kit and work out ways round the mass market thing .

Im glad you are on board and hope you keep enjoying the forum as much as you seem to have already  ;)

Taz , come on ! Freecycle ? Brewing stuff ? The con artists have that all sewed up mate.....been talked about on other threads......gumtree ? Well I dont know about that one but gotta be worth a try....

...but the newbies doing pretty damn well with his lateral thinking reckons I

Art....mate , with respect do you have experience of the cost of living in the UK these days ? 5 gal food grade bucket w/ lid for a fiver ? Delivered (and this is the killer with the fuel prices in the UK) ? Pretty useful price .
