It's my first time brewing and i am using a beginners kit (Woodfordes Wherry) to see how I get on. Have barrelled the beer a week ago and realised today that i had used the wrong cap. I have used the standard cap instead of the pre-drilled cap with the valve for putting in the CO2.

What would be the best thing to do, can I replace the cap and when should i do that?

Have read that the beer in the barrel will not last as long without topping up the CO2 and be difficult to get out once I start pouring. Would appreciate your comments as I would not like to waste first beer brewed.

Should have naturally produced co2 if well primed. As the previous poster said mights aswel l wait until it needs some. All opening it will do is expose it to the oxygen that makes it spoil quicker. Whether you do it sooner or later I'd give it some co2 then leave it a bit then crack the lid to release the air then give it some more.
