So, after my father-in-law & I getting though a few dozen bottles of Stewart Brewing (Edinburgh Microbrewery) Black IPA and deciding it is a great beer, I pondered doing one myself.

I brew kits, because I don't have the time to build AG kit, or use it (2 kids under 3!) so I read various threads on here & came up with a plan:

Better brew IPA kit
1kg Light DME
250g Carafa Special 3
60g of Cascade

I chose cascade as I know I like it as a hop & also liked the Better brew IPA kit I did in September.

I cold steeped the Carafa 3 for 10 hours in 1 litre of good Scottish tap water, strained the liquid off then added 30g of cascade & brought to the boil for 5 minutes.

I then used this to make up the BB IPA kit in place of some of the boiling water.

I fermented at 20 degrees using my aquarium heater in the FV. After about 8 days I chucked in another 30g of cascade in a weighted hop sock and left for another few days.

OG1.048 (I might have added some sugar!?)
FG 1.012 so a nice 4.7%

Bottled two weeks ago & tried a couple of bottles - it really is quite fantastic!

Feel free to try this 'recipe' or make suggestions :)

A good intuitive use of a kit. Just shows that you can really cutomise a kit with a little thought and research, producing a very interesting looking beer.

Well Done :thumb:

I was about to write exactly the game as GA, until I saw he beat me to it

I like the simplicity of your label, very effective :thumb:

Nice one, really like the use of adjuncts on a kit beer! Looks spot on for a CDA . Next time you brew it, why not use the remaining 70 g of cascade as a dry hop (assuming you had a 100g pack and used 30g for the boil). In an IPA I don't think there's such a thing as too much dry hops! Cheers T

70g of hops wouldn't fit in the muslin 'hop sock' I've got.
I did consider using 50g in the boil and the remainder as a dry hop, but 30+30 seems to work ok.
