I see on the BBC that, according to Cancer Research UK (CRUK), obesity now causes more cases of the four common cancers than smoking!

What the people at CRUK don't say is that if we keep eliminating the more hazardous elements of life then obviously the cause of death will shift, along with the types of cancer that may cause such fatalities.

In my lifetime we have:
  • Discovered and eliminated human exposure to most of the really hazardous substances. (e.g. asbestos, polyvinyl monomers, benzene etc)
  • Discovered the dangers and modified our behaviour towards some of the more common hazards. (e.g. exposure to UV light, tobacco, alcohol, salt, sugar etc.)
Personally, I've had a cousin die from skin cancer, two mates who have had to have melanoma cancers cut out of their backs and I have just ended a course of Efudix to sort out some "sun damage". No-one told us that getting a tan could be hazardous and I apparently incurred the sun damage as a lad swimming in an open-air pool and as an adult working in some of the sunniest places on earth.

My objection is that the various experts always fail to point out that human life is a finite thing, that everyone will die of something and no-one will live forever no matter how much they try!

The photograph is me today looking happy that the Efudix course has ended and now all I have to do is to wait for the improvement to kick in and make me handsome; for the first time ever!

Enjoy!

Seems not to bad a reaction on the spectrum.
Be good to see the outcome these years later.

Hmm, I've got a session with that stuff coming later in the year. The doc showed me some photos - and we agreed we'd wait until after our holiday!
And as ex-18 stone shortarse I agree that obesity should neither be shamed or normalised, it's too complex an issue and life shortening.

Update:

Managed to get an appointment today so that someone at the Doctor’s can refer me to a Specialist.

This is for two persistent growths that appeared last year. I flagged them to my Doctor in February of this year but we agreed to keep an eye on them.

Self-diagnosed as Basal Cell Carcinomas (aka Rodent Ulcers) they are the most common type of skin cancer; and may (according to t’Internet) be fatal if left untreated!

Hence, the request to see a Specialist.

Here’s hoping I don’t lose my good looks, or die sober!
:D

@MalcB here’s a photo to enjoy on your holiday!
