Hi all done a couple of kits and would like to get my hand on a selection of grains / hops so I can get creative , been reading up and from what I can see crushing yourself is better for freshness so I'm looking for a small budget friendly mill , max grain bill wise would be around 2kg from most recipies I've looked at.
Regards
Grumps

There are two ways of doing this: get one of the tinned, Chinese things that look like large coffee mills, or you can pay around £100 and get something like a Grain Gorilla. The first type works, but it's labour intensive, messy and difficult to regulate the crush size. The second is worth every penny and will last you a lifetime.

Will look at the grain gorilla but I fear it's outside my budget:(

Wish I were a bit closer. I've got two of the cheaper ones: one I bought and one someone gave me. Both redundant. But, they're far from useless and I used one for a couple of years, It takes ages to grind down a 5Kg load, but 2 Kg might be easier.
Which one of the cheaper type is it , if you have used and it works all be it slow I might have to get a lower budget one as I think my good lady has been efficient and already given Santa my Christmas pressy.

Avoid from the bulldog ones.
This. I hated mine, didn’t help that I ruined it from using the drill in it, but a better mill probably wouldn’t have got ruined.

I upgraded to the Grainfather mill just over a year ago and it’s fantastic. Not cheap but I’m hoping it’ll last me a long time.

If the only reason for getting a mill is to experiment with recipe creation you can order pre-crushed recipes of your design from geterbrewed, malt miller and I think now cross my loof too. Not trying to put you off getting a mill, I can see the advantages of buying base malt in bulk and always having grain on hand, but thought I would mention in case you were thinking the only way to create your own recipes was using one.

If you are just getting in to all grain I’d say there are other areas to focus on first. a lot of experienced brewers still but pre crush. So there are no issues with it. I’ve been brewing 5 years without one. That said I do have my eye on the grainfather mill
