as above can i use lactose/milk sugar to back sweeten in ciders and wine? i would like to use in a stout kit for a milk stout but wanted to know can i use it for my other brews.

The simple answer is yes, here is a reference from homebrewtalk.com

Brewing with Lactose

Lactose is largely unfermentable and is often used with brewing for sweetness and body. It can be added at any stage of the brewing process since the sugars will not be converted by yeast. It is a characteristic ingredient in Milk Stout, also called Sweet Stout.

Because it is non-fermentable then it cannot be used for priming sugar, see John Palmers book How to Brew page 111 for further info. Here is an old link to an early - not the latest version of the ebook.
http://www.howtobrew.com/ it will give you more information.

I consider this book to be pretty much the brewing bible.

nah, it sucks. hardly sweet at all. much better off with aspartame for cider, or even better yet, kill it with k-sorbate and use sugar! if you don't mind it flat...

im going to order to add to my stout any way but just wanted to know if i could use any of my left over in my cider. dont like flat cider. might use it in my wow's
