hy all quick quest can i use any sterillizer or do i have to get the homebrew stuff

No you can use a variety of things including thin bleach. However anything which is chloiorine based has to be rinsed if you are brewing beer as you get off flavours from chlorine. A lot of us use Videne which is a medical sterilizer and is iodine based. Search the forum there are plenty of threads on it.

ahhh so when you guys make beer ect do you use tap water straight from tap

When you make an all grain or extract beer the wort is boiled for 90 minutes usually which sterilises it. Once it is boiled everything that comes into contact with it is sterilised.

Kit beers I do, yes ;)

And hot water straight from the condensing combi boiler too :thumb:

any tap water you don't boil should be left to stand overnight to allow the chlorine to evaporate but then that increases the chance of it becoming contaminated - I'm no expert but thats my conclusion! I got myself down to ASDA for some 19p bottles of water to top up my wort when it was transferred to the FV... if you have any doubt it is worth it for the peace of mind!

Back in the day when I did kits I use to boil the wort as well, forgot about that.
Back in the day I think most, if not all kits required boiling. I certainly remember having to do so.

I use tap water with no problems.

p.s. there is now a stickie on sterilising solutions. Should answer your original question.

hy can i use any type of steriliser i mean like general house hold or baby steriliser or does it have to be proper homebrew stuff

You must rinse all chlorine based sterilisers bleach or brewing ones as they will react with the hops and form TCP in the bottle

The founder of StarSan said once on an american hombrew radio show that you can also use 1oz of thin bleach and 1oz of vinegar in 5gallons of water to make a 30s contact no rinse sanitizer. The vinegar activates the bleach and sets free the disinfectants and is because of this more effective than pure bleach. Never mix bleach and vinegar directly, dilute one of them in water before adding the other. I use this one but I rinse with tap water afterwards. Never had any infections or other problems.

You can listen to the podcast HERE it starts at 8.50

I prefer star San personally because it is very easy to use and very effective. There are quite a few sanitizers on the market now, but I recommend one that is a no rinse due to ease of use.
