I actually don't pitch onto a whole yeast cake, I use a clean sanitised FV and calculate the amount of yeast slurry to pitch with the Mr Malty yeasty pitching calculator.
I'm liking the idea of transferring my first brew to a 2nd FV and then putting my 2nd brew on top of the sediment that remains with a quick stir/ aeration. Am I reading that correct?
I think I aerated properly for my brews as it's a long drop from my boiler to my FV.
