This van is great up top. New engine, good gears and handling. No rust or bubbling except for the underside. It had been sealed at some point but that has mainly fallen off now. What do you make of this and what about those poorly welded plates? Why are they there?

Having restored a 73 manta I can honestly say that is shocking! Might as well have bluetacked a sheet of paper on underneath. Looks in one photo to go over a chassis rail so I can't see how that would ever pass an mot! Needs to be seam welded over structural components.
You'd need to take them off to look, but on face if it, I'd suspect a god awful attempt at patching over areas needing proper repair.
Could be wrong but I'd personally rip those off asap to see whats underneath.
(I am in pub on 7th pint right now! Called shenanigans no less!)

Thanks shug. There are 4 in total in equal positions as the one shown in the picture. I felt it wasnt right. Surley moisture could easily be trapped up there and make any problems even worst? Its a shame as the rest of the van holds up well. I'll give this one a miss then.

+1 Never should of passed an MOT, get them off find out whats hiding, clean and re patch or remove and repair properly

Not for me to say, but Shug seams to know what he's talking about, even after seven pints, probably could make the same judgment after seven more, without difficulty. ;)
Depends on the price and how much work you want to get into, or pay to have done ? Its not too hard to make the top bit look good for a short time ;)
I'm a bit like Shug at the moment, so don't take my advice. :D
S
P.S. Barge pole "springs" ????????? !!!!!!!!!! to mind. ;)

By the looks of it a crocodile has crawled under it and shat around the edges of the plates.

If I saw that I would run away, from it, If the owner is happy with a crappy weld like that, they are also likely to have covered up plenty of other faults.

UP

Its not a repair,in my opinion they have just badly tacked a bit of sheet on to hid something, never pass a proper mot. Walk away. :nono:

Im with UP 100%. Most people treat there camper as there pride and joy. This has been bodged so c
ould easy have been bodged in other areas such as Gas & Electrics. I would walk away.

Jeez that looks like something I'd do to cover up a big rust problem.
"Aw F#$k it, weres my 2mm steel?!"
