I'm looking to do a step mash for a wheat beer next weekend. As I'll be applying heat whilst the bag is in the pot, I think I need something to take it off the base where the gas will be heating. Would this be ok to stand the bag on?

I think the bag will still touch the bottom, very little height on this cake stand, needs to be raised higher.

Ahh ok. My bag is polyester voile. Is that still ok?

I guess it depends on how aggressively you heat it. If the heat into the base is less than the dissipation afforded by the wort then you have no problem. you could just pull the bag clear of the bottom while heating to your rest temps...?

Thanks... there's 3-4 steps...i'd have no arms left after it! I'll have a look for something else I could use, or maybe see if I could get my mrs to make me a cotton bag. Would this be as efficient a filter as a voile bag?

Ah, no, don't pull it out! Just pull the opening of the bag down the outside of the pot to lift the bottom of the bag up a bit and secure it. Alternatively, if you have a draw string you could close the bag and pull it to the side which would let you stir...

Ah thank you, good idea.

I could try either as I have a drawstring. I could possible find something to go over the top of the boiler and suspend it from there too? Maybe not quite as easy as having a stand at the bottom that I could leave there though.

I got a couple of round trivets that are supposed to be for putting hot pans on your work tops off of eBay for a couple of quid.

Sit one in the bottom of your pan and no worries.

Thanks! Could you send a link at all?

Asda have a stainless steel colander for £3... i can't see why that wouldn't work too... any problems seen with using one of these?

I used to use a stainless steel colander in my electric boiler. Worked fine.

I use the following to keep the bag off the element on my boiler, I think its a fruit bowl but its SS and works a treat, I bent the spokes to give it some stability over the element.
