I'm toying with an upgrade from my 15 litre stockpot and stumbled on this instructable. It whet the overlap of my lofi/lo cost/nerdy Venn diagram nicely

Thought some of you on here might be interested too. If anybody has done any similar sort of build I'd be keen to hear about it too.

[PS: obviously the thread title was deliberately flippant and I know the the design in the link doesn't do much of what the Higher End Homebrew Tech can]

It should make beer, n that's what the others do.

I'm thinking about building the controller I have most/all of the bits or may be an Ardbir or maybe I'll stick with my perfectly adequate eBay PID/SSR combo. What happens depends mainly on how board I get and if my inner geek gets the better if my common sense.

I understand your concerns but you have a heating element in a (plastic) domestic kettle dont you? Bet you dont even think about it when you flick the switch for a cuppa

(I definately wouldnt attempt to makes something like this myself though as my DIY skills are non existant)

Yeah you're right! Looking it up Polypropylene has a melting point at about 160C and the boil shouldn't ever get that hot! So as long as they're always submerged it would be fine.

Interesting for sure but I was hoping it was going to be a DIY recirculating job ala Grainfather etc. I'm sure it would be an easy next step to add a pump etc. but it doesn't show that

for £3 60l hdpe barrel, i brewed with a hdpe blue barrel boiler til i was bitten by the shiny bug collection from bristol however ;(
for PP buckets similar to the one linked to check out the copper kettle online brewshop, they also sell drilled through 15mm compression tank connectors for making a connect to inside and outside drain opening


Go for it.. and keep us upto date with the build as you go..
