However I'd say that the water treatment in France is just as efficient as that in the UK, and that mains water is safe to drink.

But you're right, I wouldn't drink water that has been tanked.

Ahhah, follow you now. I've not been told of any issues when in France, but in Majorca we have always been told not to drink it.

to speed up filling from the sink, disinfect the sink, put the plug in and put the tap on and get a syphon going so the sink fills up while water's syphoned off. Then one campden per gallon.

Perhaps it was just how my Dad explained it to me as a kid, so.... Bit of a brain dump...
We were told when on holiday in foreign countries to never drink from the taps, perhaps this was my parents being over protective, but.... Legionella (as another poster said above) do not grow in cold water, so tepid water in an open tank is susceptible, no matter if your in the UK, or abroad.

Apologies to forum members not in the UK, but I will not drink from any tap, French, German, Indian, American or British, if I am unsure as to the origin, and cleanliness of that water. I value my health.

yes always drink bottled water abroad..................unless they have a Tesco store nearby.then don't bother drink from the tap....

People who live abroad in Spain etc don't seem to be dropping dead with poisoning from their water in any great numbers....

As far as I can tell the locals all drink bottled water. When in stores abroad, getting supplies, we often see the locals doing their shopping. The trolleys always have 10-15L of water in them :)
