Hello,

I'm about to start my first brew. I was able to find a disused 30L burco boiler to mash in.
Before I start brewing in it (and before destroying the element), I thought I should check the following.

1. Will I need to prevent solid particles (e.g. hops) coming into contact with the element.
2. If so, what is the best way to do this.

I've also not given much consideration to the best way of cooling the wort.
Any quick fixes for a first brew (without making an immersion coil)

Thanks :thumb:

No. As long as they can't get caught underneath. Burcos are fine though.

You could just leave it to cool down naturally, but it's far from ideal. But I did that for my first few brews and had no problems.

Thanks for the response.

First brew went okay, though the thermostat for the burco seemed to cut-out at 92C ish (hence the topics about bypassing the safety cut-out!)
I managed to boil up the hops in seperate containers on the hob, which wasn't an issue.
Then poured everything back to the burco. This might not have been so clever, as the run-off took forever - but plenty of time to get oxygen into it for the yeast.

I managed to cool it using 2L frozen water bottles - maybe not the best option from a hygiene perspective

Should be bottling it today, so not long to find out how badly I've done.

Did you get an "Hot Break"?
