Brewing in a Cellar

Has anybody got any neat idea's for brewing in a cellar?

My main concerns are the steam from the boil (electric) and water drainage from cooling and cleaning.

The household drains of the property are higher than the cellar

I'm brewing on 2 g30 parallel, and a decent extractor fan deals with the steam.

1. Can you extract the steam?
2. I use long hoses from a garden tap to the garage could you do something similar.
3. move your vessels upstairs to clean if they’re not too heavy.

Yes I could clean up in the kitchen or rear yard, but I cool my wort with a copper wort chiller that takes approximately 25 minutes

I am capable of getting fresh water down there, and the gas and leccy meters are down there, so ok for electric

extraction of steam is difficult as the cellar has no windows

maybe a smaller version of @chopps condenser?

2 long hose pipes will work for cooling but extraction could be a problem, buy a dehumidifier.

Make a steam condenser.




Some form of collection reservoir with a pump attached should deal with your waste water. You could even fit a sink down there.

make a small drain tank?, you can buy a submersible pump that has a float switch and pump the water to the upstairs drainage system.
a lot of cellars have such a pump installed.

Had a think about your problem and decided that a toilet macerator, a sink and a fan would be best: if you are able to hit the DIY trail, the whole lot could be done for less than £250.

The toilet macerator can cope with hops, trub and a limited amount of grain. Plumbed in, it is an automatic system that can be discharged through a small diameter pipe.

The sink would be easy to plumb in for water and again the macerator would be automatic.

I'm not sure I want to know what failed in this experimentation.

The macerator is a great suggestion, though.

I had the same thought with a macerator, the one's I saw online had a maximum operating temperature of 40c so I'm not sure they are suitable to drain away the hot water from my chiller
